The removal of pollutants from fishpond wastewater with the use of an alternative low-
cost adsorbent is the main focus of this study.
The main ingredient used in this study is the aged refuse which does the adsorption of
pollutants because of the following characteristics: versatile nature, simple design and ease of
operation as well as efficiency in the ejection of pollutants from wastewater.
The first method of data collection used is sampling. The researchers obtained the aged
refuse, the adsorbent that is to be used as an alternative for recycling wastewaters, from the Air
Hitam Sanitary Landfill Site found in Malaysia. They got some portion of the samples obtained
then even got smaller bits of it by breaking it down manually, then analyzed the samples after
sieving it. The researchers also got the wastewater from the UPM fish farm also found in Malaysia
by collecting samples particularly from ponds that are already abandoned or closed. It was tested
for initial and final concentrations of TSS, TDS, Colour, NH4+, COD and BOD I accordance with
handbook for water and wastewater analysis. Vacuum filtration method, closed reflux titrimetric
method, azide modification method, spectrophotometric method, and salicylate method were used
to determine the TSS and TDS, COD, BOD, colour determination, and NH4+ respectively.
(Anijiofor, et al., 2018). After collecting the wastewater and aged refuse to be used in the
experiment, the researchers conducted batch experiments using 250 mL flasks and an electric
shaker, they took into account the effect of pH level of the wastewater by agitating the aged refuse
and also with the use of NaOH or H2SO4. Again, the experimenters took concentrations of the
said sample before and after the treatment process.
After collecting data of the samples, the researchers looked into the adsorption efficiency
to see how much pollutants were removed. The effect of pH level is also analyzed by the
experimenters since this is a crucial factor in adsorption process, since the surface property of the
aged refuse and pollutants reduction efficiency is affected by the adsorption capacity to be
determined. The effect of adsorbent dosage in the reduction of the pollutant is also used to study
the results from the experiment. Another thing the researchers looked at is how effective was the
removal of the pollutants in relation to the time used in treating the wastewater. Lastly, adsorption
isotherms were also studied to evaluate the experimental results.
The researchers concluded after analyzing the results from different tests, that the aged
refuse can be used for physical adsorption of pollutants from fishpond wastewater as an alternative
low cost treatment technology, all the pollutants reached saturation within 30 min. of treatment
and achieved over 80% reduction efficiency. The ideal pH level of the wastewater to be treated in
the experiment was pH 6, and an adsorbent dosage of 2 g 100mL-1, agitation speed of 250 rpm,
media size of <=2mm and contact time of 70 min, with over 60% of pollutants adsorbed within
the first 10 min. The aged refuse is found to be a material generous in supply and this technology
will help in the decongestion of landfills and the encouragement of landfill mining, which will
then lead to increasing solid waste generation and also, recycling potentials for wastewater
recovery and reuse(Anijiofor, et al., 2018).
