Minor Baseball Hosts Busy Weekend

saw two separate tourna-
ments, one was the AAA
Provincial Qualifier in
the Peewee division, and
the other was the Bantam
Prospects Tournament.
Both tournaments were
Baseball Manitoba sanc-
tioned events.
The weekend brought
13 teams and 200 players
to Minnedosa. This con-
sisted of eight teams in the
Peewee tournament and
five teams in the Bantam
tournament. Participating
teams came from all over
Manitoba, excluding Win-
nipeg. With all of the fam-
ily and friends who came
out to enjoy the weekend
and cheer on the players,
Minnedosa Minor Base-
ball Past President and
long-time volunteer, Terry
McLenehan, suspects that
over that weekend.
The tournament was
not really a winning or los-
ing tournament, but rather
a qualifying tournament.
Six of the eight teams in the
Peewee division moved on
to Provincials as a result of
the weekend. McLenehan
did note, however, that
there might have been a
winning team at the end of
the weekend, but that the
players were rained out on
Sunday, and so all teams
involved voted to have
qualifying points come
from the formula based on
the Round Robin tourna-
ment. While they could
have completed the tour-
nament after the rain, it
would have meant pushing
some games into Monday,
which would have made
things difficult for the
many people who came
from out-of-town.
On the Peewee side,
there was one player from
Minnedosa who made the

Organizing, setting
up and running such a
busy weekend is not a
one-person job and Terry
is thankful for the army of
local volunteers who do a
variety of important tasks
from announcing, score-
keeping, weed pulling,
grass cutting, and every-
thing else that is involved
in pulling off such a large,
successful weekend.
Now that these
two tournaments have
wrapped up, the 2018
Minnedosa minor baseball
season has now come to a
close.

Bryce Waldon Memorial Tournament

T he Bryce Waldon Me-
morial Baseball Tour-
nament was held in Rapid
City on Friday, July 20th
and Saturday, July 21st.
The tournament, which
was held at the Rapid City
Ball Diamonds had twelve
teams registered, and
managed to raise $4,500.
Waldon was a kind,
community oriented
young man, who was excit-
edly embarking on a new
adventure with his new
wife, Caryn, and the child
she was carrying. Bryce
passed away in December
2017 after tragically falling
from the roof of the house
he and Caryn were build-
ing near Rapid City.
It is for Bryce that this
baseball tournament was
held. Caryn approached
his friends with the ini-
tial idea, “because she
wanted to have a scholar-
ship at Elton Collegiate in
Bryce’s name to honour a
student who exemplifies
some of the attributes that
Bryce did,” said Brooke
Bayes, one of the organiz-
ers for the tournament.
“We thought the tourna-
ment was exactly the type
of community event that
Bryce would have loved
and supported, and it
would be a good way to
raise the money needed
for the scholarship.”

the baseball tournament
itself, while Mark Phillips
organized the beer gar-
dens, and Caryn organized

Busy weekend ahead…
The long-awaited August long weekend is upon us
which means a busy weekend of classic rock music for
Minnedosa. Earlier this week, fans began arriving in
Minnedosa for this weekend’s much-anticipated Rock-
in’ the Fields of Minnedosa. Many businesses, includ-
ing The Tribune, will be closed on Monday, August 6th
which is a civic holiday. Since 2014, this day has been of-
ficially known as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba. The local
UCT group is gearing up for the annual Minnedosa Terry
Fox Run next month. See Coming Events for more details
on the local run.
Increased Police Presence…
There will be an increase in police presence this
weekend during Rockin’ the Fields of Minnedosa. A
Manitoba Public Insurance funded program will fi-
nance the additional police resources for the August
long weekend. Through this program, checkstops will
be conducted and there will be additional roving patrols
in an attempt to deter and apprehend impaired drivers.
There is also expected to be enforcement of other areas
of the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Gaming Control Act
and the Criminal Code. This same program was utilized
in Minnedosa during the 2017 August long weekend and
was deemed successful and is hoped to continue in the
year’s ahead.
Familiar Faces At Reunion…
A number of locals, including Ye Old Editor, made
the pilgrimage to Austin, MB to take in the 64th Annual
Manitoba Thresherman’s Reunion and Stampede. This
year’s reunion, which ran from July 26th to 20th, fea-
tured International Harvester as its showcase line of an-
tique equipment. A number of local area residents lend a
helping hand at the long-running festival each year and
a few familiar faces were spotted throughout the grounds
in the Pioneer Power Parade, Homesteaders Village
Blacksmith Shop, General Store and Barber Shop. If you
haven’t attended the reunion for some time, make plans
to check it out next year as it will be celebrating its 65th
anniversary - a pretty amazing run for an annual festival!

Good Things Happening in Riding Mountain

D ue to the blackout on government announce-
ments during the recent St. Boniface by-election,
I was unable to write a column that detailed some
of the good things that have happened in the Riding
Mountain constituency.
I am pleased to announce that several projects
have been funded in the constituency by the Depart-
ment of Sport, Culture and Heritage over recent weeks.
The Beef and Barley Festival, held every October in
Russell, was awarded an operational grant of $2,069
under the Community Festivals and Events program.
Two area regional libraries received operational
grants. Minnedosa was awarded $36,423, while Rapid
City received $19,321. The Classic Garden Inc. in Birtle
received funding of $404 to support Spring Classes at
the Theatre. The Shell Valley Romanian and Ukrainian
Orthodox Church Cemetery was awarded $5,097 un-
der the Heritage Grants Program.
Phase One of the Open Air Museum on Russell’s
Main Street was granted $10,000 under the Heritage
Grants Program.
Green Team funding was awarded to nearly ev-
ery town and municipality in the Riding Mountain
constituency for grounds maintenance, conservation,
community beautification and childrens and youth
recreation projects. A total of $78,336 from the De-
partment of Municipal Relations was divided between
the Binscarth Park and Pool, Cardale Sports Commit-
tee, Little Saskatchewan River Conservation District,
Minnedosa and District Recreation Commission,
Municipality of Russell-Binscarth, Oak River Com-
munity Association, Prairie View Municipality, Rural
Municipality of Ellice-Archie, Rural Municipality of
Oakview, Rural Municipality of Yellowhead, Rossburn

Prairie View Municipality has received $1,500
under the Dutch Elm Disease Management Program
administered by the Department of Sustainable De-
velopment.
Several residents and former residents of the Rid-
ing Mountain constituency have been appointed to
boards by the Provincial Government. Harold Reid of
Brandon was appointed to a two-term on the board
of Manitoba Hydro. Reid, who grew up in Isabella,
is a Chartered Professional Accountant with Sensus
Partnership of Chartered Accountants. David Klassen
of Russell, a licensed funeral director with Braendle-
Bruce Funeral Service, was appointed to a three-year
term as a member of the six-person Funeral Board of
Manitoba. The Board is committed to enhancing fu-
neral and cemetery services within a fair, ethical and
transparent marketplace. Bryan Purdy of Winnipeg,
who is the son of the late Ron and Margaret Purdy of
Shoal Lake, was appointed to a one-year term on the
board of directors of the newly-created Crown corpo-
ration Efficiency Manitoba. The mission of Efficiency
Manitoba is to reduce power costs Manitobans pay
and to deliver improved energy saving programs, in a
cost-effective manner. Jim Irwin of Lake Audy is one
of eight members appointed to the Expert Advisory
Council for the Climate and Green Plan. The panel will
advise the government on implementing the Made-
in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan.
Work continues on curve realignment, pass-
ing lanes and paving on Highway #10 just south of
Minnedosa. The project, which began in 2016, is ex-
pected to be completed later this summer. Highway
#16 from Newdale to Basswood received another layer
of asphalt earlier this spring to complete work on the
stretch between Newdale and the junction of High-
ways #16 and #10. Work is underway to pave Highway
#83 north for 17.4 kilometres from the junction of Pro-
vincial Road #482. Also included is a thin lift overlay
of pavement on Provincial Road #592 heading into
Inglis. A hill on PR #482 is being cut down and inter-
section improvements are being done on the turnoff
to the Asessippi Ski Area.

stated they are exploring
the option of privatizing
both services. This would
mean the sell off of the
public fleet of air ambu-
lances and water bombers.
This is short term
thinking on the part of the
Pallister government. Liq-
uidating an essential pub-
lic service to balance the
books in the short term is
not a wise move. The prov-
ince owns and maintains
22 aircrafts providing air
ambulance service to ru-
ral and remote communi-
ties as well as for forest fire
suppression throughout
the province.
Air ambulance is
an essential service sav-
ing thousands of lives
throughout the province.
Manitoba forest fires are a
reality so why are we chop-
ping our water bombers.
With global warming for-
est fires numbers will only
increase. Does this govern-
ment really believe that it’s

sion of interest is currently
being developed. In other
words, by the time you find
out it will be a done deal.

Cadurcis News Joint Landfill Info Sessions Held

puis who were married in Battleford, SK on July 21st.
All the members of the Northam family attended.
Congratulation also to Clayton and Margaret Ware-
ham who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in
the company of family and friends. The afternoon began
with water sports at Beautiful Butterfield Lake. This was
followed by a roast pork supper. The evening terminated
with fireworks at dark. Many more Clayton and Margaret.
Sympathy is extended to the Greer family on the re-
cent passing of cousin Roy Greer. Also sympathy is ex-
tended to Malcolm and Shirley Rose on the passing of
cousin Gerald Reid, Sympathy is also extended to the
Osborne family of Newdale on the passing of an uncle.

More Minnedosa Than Expected at Fringe Festival

pened at the Winnipeg
Fringe Festival recently.
The 2018, 31st annual
festival staged hundreds of
plays across almost thirty
venues, over 12 days and
true fans of the festival
have their complicated
systems. They follow. They
frequent. But there has
not usually been a strong
Minnedosa connection to
the Fringe, although this
year was the exception.
Minnedosa play-
wright, Dale Lakevold, is
a seasoned Fringe Festival
participant. He has written
and staged award-winning
Fringe Plays in the past,
and some time ago, the
seed of an idea for a new
play germinated in the
mind of the Brandon Uni-
versity professor of creative
writing. He took the idea
to the head of the Drama
department at BU, James
Forsythe, an informal pact

fast, the parade with over
40 floats, a large display of
baking, handiwork, garden
produce and children’s
art were all judged. The
Cameron Connection en-
tertained in the afternoon
before a cold plate supper
was served. The gymkha-
na, light and heavy horse
show and cattle judging
took place throughout the
day. The Legion sold tick-
ets on a 50/50 draw and the
lucky winner of $500 was
Barb Pedersen of Newdale.

kins who celebrates his
big day at the end of July.

Women of the World, Ruth
Shanks of Australia, also
attended. All the speakers
were superb, the Manitoba

It’s Good To Be Back Home Again

settled back within the
walls of Minnedosa’s high-
rise housing complex.
Mary returned to her
newly renovated suite
on the third floor on May
28th and is happy to be
back home. “I am glad to
be back,” said Mary. “I ex-
pected everything to be the
same and was a bit disap-
pointed at first. But now I
am happy with the chang-
es. I guess it was a good
thing to be moved out for
construction.”
Mary, along with all
of the other Town View
Manor residents received
notice in late December
2015 that the entire build-
ing would be undergoing
a major renovation known
as a “deep refresh” and that
all residents would have to
be relocated by May 31st,
2016. Obviously, for many,
this was a bit of a shock
and somewhat concerning
– having to pack up, leave
the space you call home
and being unsure where
you might move to during
the construction process.

She turned these down

each suite feel a little more
homey and cozy. There are
also new frosted glass wall
sconces with bright LED
lighting.

This space, still somewhat
familiar from before the
deep refresh, has also un-
dergone a major facelift

to include washrooms and
storage. Next door, the
kitchen has also been to-
tally redesigned with new
cupboards, appliances
and stainless steel counter
tops. A new pass-through
can be found between the
kitchen space and com-
mon area.
While there are nu-
merous upgrades and im-
provements to the build-
ing, there are still some
concerns for residents
returning to Town View
Manor. Some are sad to
see that the shuffleboard
table and piano are gone
from the sixth floor com-
mon room while others
that have been installed.
Some of these doors are
very heavy and are difficult
for some senior residents
to open. The biggest con-
cern for many is that while
the interior is complete,
the exterior landscaping
is still very much under-
way making the outdoor
space at Town View Manor
somewhat unsightly and
still very much a construc-
tion zone. Residents are
looking forward to when
exterior work is completed
so that they can enjoy the
building’s outdoor space
with freshly cut lawn,
shrubs and flowers.
Although the Town
View Manor has graced the
skyline of Minnedosa for
over forty years, the recent
“deep refresh” has made
the building look and feel
like a brand new, mod-
ern facility which should
provide comfortable, safe
housing for local residents
for many more years to
come.

Mary and her husband,
Isaac, first moved to Town
View Manor in 2010 from
their farm in the Cadurcis
District. When Isaac moved
to Minnedosa Personal
Care Home four years later,
Mary continued to occupy
the suite on the north side
of the Manitoba Housing
complex. When notice to
relocate came, the search
for a temporary home for
Manor residents began.
While some residents had
to temporarily move to
other communities, Mary
was fortunate to find hous-
ing here in Minnedosa at
Kinsmen Court.
Earlier this year, for-
mer Manor residents re-

While some of the
suites in Town View Manor
were pretty much origi-
nal from when the build-
ing first opened in 1974,
Mary’s suite had been
one of a few that had
been upgraded before she

Moments in Riding Mountain: Rest Well, Charlie

July. It was a typical July
day for the prairies, hot
and dry, with blue sky and
white puffy clouds. A per-
fect day for haying, but in
the end, a perfect day for
saying goodbye too.
Charlie had passed
away back in the winter
and the summer inter-
ment, to be laid to rest
beside my mom, Joan and
older brother Dave, was
a chance to have a true
gathering of the clan. The
service was simple; a few
official words, followed by
some heartfelt thoughts by
family and friends.
In the follow-up pot-
luck at the home farm, the
supper spread would have
been greatly appreciated
by Charlie. He was the
Grand Doge of the King-
don family and loved noth-
bies, dogs, a friendly cat or
two, and of course dessert.
Long-time neighbours
came along, far from emp-
ty handed. The Currahs
brought loaves of home-
made bread, whose thick
slices were Charlie’s favou-
rite snacking treat. Marion
McNabb brought her An-
gel Food cake, made from
scratch, and a cranberry
pie, whose stinky socks
smell evoked memories of
past Thanksgiving meals.
It was also one of the few
desserts that the children
left untouched for their el-
ders.
Mark D, arriving after
supper, brought a flask of
sipping whiskey as a di-
gestif, much appreciated
to help settle the stomach
after eating too much.
During this time, the
children ran, the dogs
barked, there was laugh-
ter and remembrances.
With the crops in the
ground, and the spraying
done, hot July days meant
haying time was the focus
of summer farm work. Not
that I want to overstate
my role in the whole pro-
cess, especially in the early
years.

scrawny runt of a kid, it
meant that my role was
limited to raking the hay so
that it would dry, using the

However, haying in
the late 1970s was a time
of transition on the King-
don farm. Round bales
were being adopted, and
although we didn’t own a
round baler, Max McNabb
would be hired to roll up a
fair number of bales for us.
Dad, being a practical fel-
low, liked to have a few
square bales in reserve,
the chore tractor on some
distant winter day.
So, every year we
would bale 400 or 500 al-
falfa square bales, and
later in the fall, maybe a
couple of thousand straw
square bales.
Baling alfalfa seems
to be more memorable –
the bales were heavier of
course, and haying dur-
ing the summer heat, with
dust and chaff sticking
to sweaty necks while we
bounced across the old
hay field pockmarked by
badger and gopher holes
are seared in my memory.
And there is nothing
like the taste of the luke-
warm water from a 1970s
era Thermos water jug.
Yet, despite the on-
farm work, July would be
the time that Charlie and
Joan would be sure to wel-
come family and visitors

a gaggle of cousins from
British Columbia. When
the BC cousins arrived,
there would be a much-
anticipated flurry of ac-
tivity - camping, bonfires,
and raucous games of kick

Farm work, though,
couldn’t wait, so there was
also shared communion
in the chores and in hay-
ing. In that same spirit, we
were so glad that the BC
cousins joined us to help
lay Charlie to rest. Perhaps
they too felt the call of the
fine haying weather and
shared memories.
Nature Notes:
I made a promise to
Rae, that during our stay
in Point Pelee, I would
forgo the making of jams,
the freezing of garden
I lied. We have a tiny
patch of raspberries be-
hind the house, and the
sweet red fruit were just
begging to be made into
jam. Well, that was a bit
of slippery slope, and sud-
denly those discounted
pints of over-ripe straw-
berries at our local farm-
er’s market were also beg-
ging to be processed.
Needless to say, I’m
into full-on jam and freezer
stuffing. The only sad part
is that I am running out of
both freezer space and jam
jars! My wife’s patience, on
the other hand, seems to
be holding out - for now.

An Environment Act proposal has been filed by Tri-J Industries for the
continued operation of a stationary sawmill facility at SW 34-17-15W in
the Rural Municipality of Rosedale, Manitoba. The facility manufactures
timber using circular saw and further processing some of the rough
lumbers using a planer. Tri-J industries also proposes to install a grinder to
produce livestock bedding from waste wood. The potential environmental
effects of the development are related to noise and particulate emissions.
Anyone likely to be affected by the above operation and who
wishes to comment on the proposal should contact Eshetu

JEAN MARY SPRAGGS ISAAC DYCK ROGER ADAM DILLABOUGH

December 17th, 1925 – October 25th, 1919 – December 17th, 1929 –

Jean Mary Spraggs,
passed away at the age of 92, at
the Minnedosa Personal Care
Home with her family by her
side.
Jean was born in Kel-
wood, MB to Isaac and Abigail
Grant. She received her educa-
tion in Kelwood. When she fin-
ished school, she worked at a
few odd jobs then joined the staff at the
Royal Bank in Shoal Lake in 1946.
It was in Shoal Lake, at a dance, that she met the love of
her life, Jim Spraggs. They were married October 15th, 1947
and lived on the Spraggs home farm. They were blessed with
three children; Beverley, Larry and Randy. In 1954, they left
the farm and moved to Bethany, where Jim purchased Bethany
Motors. After they purchased the garage in Bethany, she helped
Jim with the bookwork and also manned the garage when-
ever Jim was called out to fix some machinery. She drove the
school van for a number of years and was also licensed to drive
the school bus! She was also a member of the Bethany Social
Group. Family was very important to Jean. She liked to always
have cookies/dainties on hand to feed the grandkids and the
grown-ups as well! If she didn’t have any baking on hand, she
would serve toast and jam. Visitors didn’t leave without first
having coffee or tea and something to eat. You never left hun-
gry! After she and dad moved in to the Care Home, she often
commented that it would be nice to have a coffeepot, cups, and
a wee fridge so she could feed company. She would regularly
ask one of us to pick up “another package of cookies” for her to
have on hand! When she had company at the Care Home, you
were very quickly offered a cookie or a chocolate and she would
explain that she was unable to make coffee!!!
Isaac Dyck was born in
the Mennonite village Schoen-
wiese south of Winkler, MB.
Isaac is survived by his
wife Mary of 64 years; sons
Larry (Kerrie) and Lloyd (Bar-
bara); one granddaughter, two
step grandsons, three great
grandchildren and five great step
grandchildren; four sisters and
two brothers. He was predeceased by his
parents, one sister and one brother.
When he was four, his family moved to Mexico. They stayed
for 11 years and then moved back to the Winkler area.
Isaac worked at home until the age of 25. During the war
years, he worked at several different jobs—a lumber mill in On-
tario, Laming Mills, BC and as a carpenter in Calgary. All this
time he was saving money to buy a farm.
In 1947, he bought a farm in the Kirkham Bridge area,
southeast of Rivers, MB. After purchasing the farm, he con-
tinued working in the area for his neighbors. He worked on
Johnny Davidson’s cattle farm and built a barn for John Arnot.
During this time, he was making trips to Winnipeg to see Mary
Thiessen. They were married on April 4th, 1954.
Isaac farmed in the Kirkham Bridge area for 21 years. His
two sons, Larry and Lloyd were born there. In 1968, he bought
a section of land at Rapid City and farmed there for another 34
years.
In 2002, after retiring from farming, Isaac and Mary moved
to the Cadurcis area. In 2010 they moved again—this time to
Minnedosa. In 2015, Isaac moved into the Minnedosa Personal
Care Home where he had the best of care and enjoyed his re-
maining years.
Dad was a talented craftsman and handyman. He could fix

passed away at the age of 88 in
his room at the Minnedosa Per-
sonal Care Home.  Rod, the eld-
est of six boys born to farmers JC
and Verna Dillabough, was born
and raised in Deloraine, Mani-
toba.  
It was in his early 30’s,
that Rod moved to Minnedosa where
he met, and later married, Marguerite
Lorraine Black.  Rod joined Lorraine, and her
three young children from a previous marriage, at the Black
family home on Main Street in 1957.   Gladys Addean McVey
(1950) was the eldest of the three, followed by sons Dale Elton
McVey (1952) and William Aylmer McVey (1954).  Rod and Lor-
raine welcomed sons Scott Marshall in 1961 and Burke Shayne
in 1965.
In 1984, after 25 years of working for the Town of Minnedo-
sa, he retired. Rod was predeceased by Lorraine in 1982 at the
age of 54, daughter Dean in 1986 at the age of 36 and son Dale
in 2017 at the age of 65.  He was also predeceased by brothers
John, Jim and Murray.  After Lorraine’s passing, Rod spent the
next 25 years with partner Dorothy Holmstrom until her pass-
ing in 2015.  Rod is survived by his brothers, Wayne and Bob,
sons Bill, Scott and Shayne and by twelve grandchildren and
numerous great grandchildren.  
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and care
staff at the Brandon Regional Hospital, the Minnedosa District
Hospital and the Minnedosa Personal Care Home.  
Rod’s big, always constant smile, will sorely be missed by
those who loved him.   The funeral service will be held at the
Minnedosa United Church on August 23rd at 2:00 p.m.

Her love of travel was spent with Jim as they spent time
camping, fishing, and visiting family near and far. Her fondest
trip and cherished memory was to Inuvik and Alaska in their
motor home.
Jean will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Bev
(Deryl) Habing, son Larry (Wendy) Spraggs, seven grandchil-
dren (Candace and Darren, Kim and B.J., Annette and Brian,
Grant and Jena, Melissa, Pamela and Ryan, Rebecca) and ten
great grandchildren.
She also leaves to mourn her sister Elsie; sister-in-laws Jo-
anne Grant, Sue Grant, Margaret Morris, Esther Spraggs, Mary
Stockwell; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Donna
Spraggs, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-

of a pile of scrap. He loved animals; always had to have a dog
and many cats as pets. He adapted well to his surroundings.
His religious beliefs and personal faith were a large part of his
life.
Isaac passed away at the age of 98 years. He will be lovingly
remembered by his family, neighbors and many friends.
A funeral service took place in Minnedosa on August 2nd, 2018
with burial in the Cadurcis Cemetery.
