METHODOLOGY ASSIGNMENT 3
Evaluating and supplementing materials

Draft due: May 06, 2017

Final due: May 26, 2017

Length: 1000 - 1500 words

Assignment outline

You are required to:

 analyse briefly some course material
 select some appropriate material to include in a lesson as a supplement
 teach a lesson using this material
 evaluate its effectiveness

NOTE: This may NOT be one of your assessed lessons

Guidelines

1a. Briefly go through a unit or selection of units in your course book/course materials. Describe how you
might supplement it/them for use with a specific class commenting on what is missing or not appropriate,
or simply how you might provide variety. State what you might need to supplement with additional
material such as visuals, authentic texts or material adapted from other sources.

1b. Identify supplementary material and provide a rationale for selection and use.

2. Plan a lesson using your chosen supplementary material. Ensure a copy of all material, original and adapted,
is included, and that copyright sources are fully referenced.

3. Teach the lesson and then evaluate the effectiveness of the material used. Reflect on what happened in the
lesson and how this differed from your expectations at the planning stage. Outline what action you would
take if you wanted to use the material again and why.

Specific assessment criteria

For a pass level assessment you must show that you can:

1. make accurate use of appropriate terminology to describe the design and use of classroom materials
and resources
2. demonstrate the ability to use, adapt and/or create resources and materials effectively to meet lesson
objectives and the needs of learners
3. evaluate the material and its use in the lesson
4. outline steps for potential future use of material.

METHODOLOGY ASSIGNMENT 3
WORKSHOP

Adapted from: Morris, B. Distance Unit 7 RESOURCES AND MATERIALS. British Council, Bogotá 2004

 Go through the guidelines and recommendations for the

task above and underline or highlight the key words.
 Make sure you understand what the assignment consists
of.
 Discuss your thoughts with other participants on the
course.

RECOMMENDATIONS
 This assignment MAY NOT be based on one of your assessed lessons.
 You should provide evidence that the lesson was taught e.g. samples of tasks completed by
students.
 You should include the lesson plan, the original and adapted copyrighted materials and your own
created material.

Remember it is a good idea to plan an outline of the assignment before you start to write.

 What do you think would be a good structure

for this assignment?
 How many sections do you think there should be
in this assignment?
 Approximately how long will each section be?

Following is what the structure of the assignment should look like:

1. Assignment Front Page

You must include a Universidad de La Sabana - ICELT Assignment Front Cover with each assignment you
submit (please make sure you use the updated version of the front covers available in your VS course).
Assignments given in without this will not be marked. You have been provided with model cover sheets for
all the assignments. The front covers for all the assignments need to be signed by the writer.

2. Part 1 (350-500 words)

In this part you must briefly go through a unit or selection of units in your course-materials to
consider how you might supplement it/them for use with a specific class. Consider what is
missing or not appropriate or simply how you might provide variety. Think about what you might
need to supplement using additional materials such as visuals, authentic texts or materials
adapted from other sources.

 Brief group profile including: outline of your students’ learning situation, ages, level of English (e.g.
elementary/intermediate), interests and special needs e.g. discipline, disabilities etc. You should
demonstrate awareness of considerations necessary for dealing with them.
 Brief description of a unit or selection of units in your course materials, considering what is missing
or inappropriate or needed to provide variety
 Say what type of activities and materials work well with your group and link this to your choice of
supplementary materials.
 Describe your choice of supplementary material(s)
 Link your decisions on supplementary materials to your reflection on the course materials, what is
missing or inappropriate.

POSSIBLE EXAMPLES OF MATERIALS YOU MIGHT INCLUDE IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT

 A game such as Snakes and Ladders – adapted from Grammar Games (CUP), Mario
Rinvolucri, to consolidate what language students have been learning, enable
them to use it authentically and have fun.
 Realia such as clothes, fruit or vegetables, maps or timetables for dealing
with vocabulary and tapping into students’ life knowledge to facilitate
activities. Used in a role-play task to provide semi-authentic use of
language.
 An authentic text on raising self-esteem from a teenage magazine, used for a
jigsaw reading. Your own worksheet to facilitate comprehension and
interactive information exchange.
 An activity from Vocabulary games and activities (Penguin). Peter Watcyn-
Jones, to practise or extend vocabulary that has been presented.

3. Part 2 (350-500 words)

For this part you plan a lesson using your chosen supplementary material and include a rationale and
objectives for them.

 Plan a lesson using your supplementary materials

 Include a rationale and objective for the materials used – showing what learners should know and be
able to do before using your material and what they should be able to do at the end.
 You can use or adapt materials from a variety of sources but be sure to clearly state the reasons for
your choice or method of adapting or creating your own.
 Include copies of all materials, original and adapted, and ensure sources are referenced.

4. Part 3 – (after teaching) (350-500 words)

An evaluation of the effectiveness of the materials:

 Teach the lesson and then evaluate the effectiveness of the material used.

 Reflect on what happened in the lesson and how this differed from your expectations when planning
 Support your evaluation with reasons and give examples of your students’ involvement and ability to
deal with the materials
 Consider what action you would take if you wanted to use this material again in the future giving
reasons
 Think about how you might exploit the material further in another lesson or how you might re-design
the tasks.

5. References all your sources of reading.

6. Appendices

Don’t forget to include the following:

 your lesson plan
 the original and adapted copyright materials (clearly sourced)
 your own created materials
 you should provide evidence that the lesson was really taught (e.g.: samples of tasks completed by the
students)

Tackling the assignment

For part 1 you could start by completing the following table: (comments in Italics are examples
only)
What is needed to
Description of What’s missing or supplement the Why this
unit(s) of not appropriate coursebook? additional/
coursebook – what for my students? (E.g. supplementary
activities are visuals/authentic material

materials/game etc.)

For part 2, plan your lesson and choose/design/adapt your materials and use the above table to
substantiate your choice.

Part 3
1. Consider the lesson you taught using the materials.
2. Reflect on the lesson and begin to make some notes about
 whether the materials were effective or not and why this was the case
 how the use of them differed from your expectations at the planning stage and why this was
the case.

You can use this form to help you organise your notes.
