Exercise Chapter 6.4 & 6.5

6.4 (food digestion)
6.5 absorption and assimilation of digested food

1. Diagram below shows a part of the human digestive system.

a) Name the structure labelled X. [1]

Hepatic portal vein

b) I) Name two substances that can be transported by X. [1]

Amino acids and glucose

ii) Name two substances that cannot be transported by X. [2]

fatty acids & glycerol

c) Name the structure responsible for the transportation of substances mentioned

in (b) (ii). [1]
Lacteal
d) Explain what happen to :

i) Glucose [2]
glucose in the liver is used for cellular respiration.
Excess glucose is converted into glycogen for storage in the liver.
Further excess of glucose is converted into lipids

ii) Amino acid that reaches the liver. [2]

amino acids is converted to ammonia through the process of deamination.
Ammonia is then converted to urea and is excreted in the urine

e) Give two functions of fats that reach body cells. [2]

Fats are stored around organs to acts as cushions to protect internal organs from
injuries.

Excess fats are stored in the adipose tissue underneath the skin as reserved
energy (tenaga simpanan).
Q2. Diagram below shows the human digestive system.

a) Name the part where each of the following hydrolysis takes place.
i) Protein converted to peptides
[stomach]

ii) Starch converted to maltose

[mouth]

b) I) Structure T in diagram 2 has number of finger-like projections. Name the

structure.
[villus]

ii) Draw and label a longitudinal section of these projections in the space
provided.
(iii) State one characteristics of structure T that will help it to function efficiently
[1]
[has a large network of blood capillaries to transport digested food that has
been absorbed]

c) As a doctor, you have confirmed that a patient is suffering from a disease. Organ
S of the patient has to be removed.
i) What explanation would you give to the patient? Your explanation should
focus on the effect of organ S removal on digestion. [2]
the lipid digestion will be less efficient because the bile produced by the liver is
more dilute.
Organ S, the gall bladder stores and concentrates bile by water reabsorption.

ii) What advice can you give to your patient to help him handle health problems
that may arise from the removal of organ S. [2]
avoid eating food with high fats and fried food
