PERMUTATION PROBLEMS:
1. If five digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are being given and a three digit code has to be made from it if the repetition
of digits is allowed then how many such codes can be formed.
Solution:
As repetition is allowed, we have five options for each digit of the code. Hence, the required number of
ways code can be formed is, 5×5×5 = 125.
2. If three alphabets are to be chosen from A, B, C, D and E such that repetition is not allowed then in
how many ways it can be done?
Solution:
The number of ways three alphabets can be chosen from five will be,
35P=5!(5−3)! = 5×4×3×2×12×1 = 60.
Hence, there are 60 possible ways.
3. 10 students have appeared in a test in which the top three will get a prize. How many possible ways
are there to get the prize winners?
4. In how many ways the word HOLIDAY can be rearranged such that the letter I will always come to
the left of letter L?
5. There are 6 people who will sit in a row but out of them Ronnie will always be left of Annie and
Rachel will always be right of Annie. In how many ways such arrangement can be done?

COMBINATION PROBLEMS:
1. On the plane there are 6 different points (no 3 of them are lying on the same line). How many
segments do you get by joining all the points?
2. On a circle there are 9 points selected. How many triangles with edges in these points exist?
3. In how many ways you can choose 8 of 32 playing cards not considering their order?
4. On a graduation party the graduants pinged their glasses. There were 253 pings. How many
graduants came to the party?
5. Two groups consist of 26 elements and 160 combinations without repetition for k=2 together.
How many elements are in the first and how many in the second group?

Problem 1: To buy a computer system, a customer can choose one of 4 monitors, one of 2 keyboards, one of 4
computers and one of 3 printers. Determine the number of possible systems that a customer can choose from.

Solution to Problem 1:

The number of all possible computer systems that can be bought is given by

N = 4 * 2 * 4 * 3 = 96

Problem 2: In a certain country telephone numbers have 9 digits. The first two digits are the area code (03) and
are the same within a given area. The last 7 digits are the local number and cannot begin with 0. How many
different telephone numbers are possible within a given area code in this country?

Solution to Problem 2:

Using the counting principle, the total number of possible telephone numbers is given by

N = 1 * 1 * 9 * 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 = 9,000,000

Problem 3: A student can select one of 6 different mathematics books, one of 3 different chemistry books and
one of 4 different science books. In how many different ways can a student select a book of mathematics, a book
of chemistry and a book of science?

Problem 4: There are 3 different roads from city A to city B and 2 different roads from city B to city C. In how
many ways can someone go from city A to city C passing by city B?

Problem 5: A man has 3 different suits, 4 different shirts and 5 different pairs of shoes. In how many different
ways can this man wear a suit, a shirt and a pair of shoes?

Problem 6: In a company , ID cards have 5 digit numbers.

a) How many ID cards can be formed if repetion of the digit is allowed?

b) How many ID cards can be formed if repetion of the digit is not allowed?

Problem 7: In a certain country, licence plate numbers have 3 letters folllowed by 4 digits. How many different
licence plate numbers can be formed? (letters and digits may be repeated)

Problem 8: Using the digits 1, 2, 3 and 5, how many 4 digit numbers can be formed if the first digit must be 1
and repetition of the digits is allowed?
