11 Standard Practice for Measuring Coating Thickness by Magnetic-Field or Eddy-
Current (Electromagnetic) Testing Methods, sin encontrar inconformidades.

Sin embargo, al revisar las superficies galvanizadas, se encontraron zonas de

galvanizado defectuoso o faltante, que no cumplen con la ASTM A123/A123M-
13 Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel
Products:

6.2.1 Each area subject  to renovation shall be 1 in. [25 mm] or less in its narrowest dimension.

6.2.2 The total area subject  to renovation on each article shall be no more than  ½  of 1%  of
the accessible surface area to be coated on that article, or 36 in2  per short  ton [ 256 cm2 per
metric ton] of piece  weight, whichever is less.

Note  5.‐  Inaccessible  surface  areas    are  those  which      cannot  be  reached  for  appropiate
surfaces  preparation  and application    of  repair  materials  as  described  in  Practice  A780.  Such
inaccessible areas , for example, would be  the internal  surfaces of certain tanks, poles, pipes,
tubes, and so forth.

ASTM A780 - 09(2015) Standard Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated
Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings:

1.3  The  extent  of  repair  shall  be  limited  to  an  area  mutually  agreeable  to  the  contracting
parties.  Similarly, contracting parties shall agree  to the repair method to be used.

responde:

“Ocasionally, the galvanized coating can have small bare spots or other minor imperfections.
Galvanized steel can also be damaged in the field as a result of mishandling during the shipping
or from post-galvanizing operations. Regardless of how the coating is damaged, repairs of those
areas are necessary. The size of the bare area will determine whether the material can be
touched –up or must be re-galvanized. According to ASTM A123, there are limitations on the
size and total area of bars spots that can be touched-up and repaired using ASTM A70 methods.
In ASTM A123 , paragraph 6.2.1 limits any single area to 1 inch ( 25 mm) or less in its
narrowest dimension. This seems like a strange limit but the intent is to allow repair of long,
thin bare areas that could be pieces sticking together and not large square or round bare patches
from poor cleaning techniques. Paragraph 6.2.2. limit the total area subject to renovation on a
part to of 1% of the surface area to be coated on that ha article, or 36 in2 (256 cm2) per ton of
piece weight, whichever is less.

ASTM A780 discusses three different methods of repairing damaged or uncoated areas. The
three methods are zinc-based solders made specifically for the purpose of repairing, zinc-rich
painted and spayed zinc ( metallizing). In determining the method to use in repairing the
galvanized coating, several factors should be considered: Ease of application of product( repair
method); thickness control; corrosion resistance; abrasion resistance; adherence to the steel, and
appearance next to the galvanized steel.”.

Sobre los métodos de reparación, hay mucha información disponible, tanto en el sitio
web de la AGA como en el de los productores ( por ejemplo, www.zinga.eu)
