AIM:
To study Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) using MATLAB
APPARATUS:
MATLAB software
THEORY:
If message is given by m(t) and square wave carrier signal is given by c(t),Then pulse amplitude
modulated wave is given by:
Flat Top PAM: The amplitude of each pulse is directly proportional to modulating signal
amplitude at the time of pulse occurrence. The amplitude of the signal cannot be changed with
respect to the analog signal to be sampled. The tops of the amplitude remain flat.
Natural PAM: The amplitude of each pulse is directly proportional to modulating signal
amplitude at the time of pulse occurrence. Then follows the amplitude of the pulse for the rest of
the half cycle.
Modulator circuit:
Demodulation of PAM
For demodulation of PAM signal, the PAM signal is fed to the low pass filter. The low pass filter
eliminates the high-frequency ripples and generates the demodulated signal. This signal is then
applied to the inverting amplifier to amplify its signal level to have the demodulated output with
almost equal amplitude with the modulating signal.
Applications of PAM
MATLAB CODE:
t = 0:.001:10;
Am=3;%amplitude of message signal
Ac=7;%amplitude of carrier signal
fc=10;%frequency of carrier signal
fm=0.5;%frequency of message signal
m=Am*sin(2*pi*fm*t);;%message signal
c=Ac+Ac*square(2*pi*fc*t);%carrier signal
s=(m.*c);%modulated signal
