 According to ICOM this term encompasses many institutional forms
and can include „museums‟ as we knew them historically and
conventionally for much of the 19th and 20th century

 The great receptacles for Collections, once held privately and

subsequently turned over to private

 Governmental institutions to be held in perpetuity for the benefit of the

public.
 Respect for people of different races as well as people of different
faiths and religions

 Recognizing our common desire and need for harmony in society

 A society where all can live their lives in peace and harmony
Regardless of race or religion
 “Cabinets of Natural Curiosities” of the 16th century,

 The collections of diverse objects

Access to private collections began to grow with the Enlightenment and, above
all, the workers‟ revolts of the 19th century, but entrance continued to be
considered a privilege

 The 19th century was also fundamental, as the great universal exhibitions
convinced curators of the need to open their collections to the wider public

 Arrival of the information society, market influences through competition in the

leisure and tourism sector, democratizing of access to knowledge and, finally,
the changes in educational theory and practices
 „Harmony‟,

 „Social Cohesion‟,

 „Social Justice & Connectedness‟,

 „Social Inclusion & Exclusion‟

 and so on, but not actually „social harmony‟.

whether these be based on broadly economic, political, social, racial
