SAE NSIT aims to act as a direct ink between the industry and its members. As a part of this initiative, SAE NSIT organises frequent industrial visits to the prominent industries located in and around Delhi, which include the likes of Hindustan National Glass, Hero Honda, Yamaha, to highlight the diverse, advanced and automated manufacturing processes involved. There were two Industrial Trips to Maruti Udyog Ld, in October 2006 and February 2007. Furthermore, SAE NSIT also plans_ to organise a visit to Mazagaon Ship Building Dock and to the offshore facility at Bombay High in the recent fature. SAF also took part in organizing college activities such as the Golden Gate - the bridge making competition in February 2007. ‘The highlight of the calendar year however is Mechanika, the annual students’ meet organised by SAE INDIA & SAE NSIT. Mochanika, the annual technical symposium, is one of the high points of our academic calendar showcasing tho engineering talent and technical acumen of the students. It aims to foster among students a scientific temperament and a zeal for an empyreal future through an entire spectrum of events, pitting the best minds with each other and stimulating their creative genius. Itis an attempt to bring out the talent amongst students through a wide array of activities, while providing a forum for them to interact with one another. Not one to rest on its auzels, SAE has a plethora of activities planned for the coming year, starting with an Industrial Trip to Hero Honda/NTPC in Noida. This will be followed by a mechanical case study in April 2007, a new initiative by SAE. An Industrial Trip to Yamaha Greater Noida is in the pipeline for April as well. All of this will culminate with the Annual ‘Technical Symposium-Mechanika, which is slated to be held in April as well. NSIT Motorsports, comprising students from different years, was another initiative by the students of the SAE NSIT chapter, which is a further tribute to the vision of the chapter to encourage and develop new technologies based on current 9 industrial trends as per the interests and skills of the student fraternity. Open Source and Linux Asia 2007 Open source is a development method fer software that hamesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility ower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in. Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The idea of open source isto eliminate the access costs of the consumer and the creator by reducing the restrictions of copyright. ‘This will load to creation of additional works, which build upon previous work and add to greater social benefit. The 4th Annual Linax Asia Conference was held at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi from 31st January, 2007 to 2nd February, 2007. CSI - NSIT Students Branch formed a NSIT Linux Community, and participated in the conference as a community. The student members also assisted in the registration procedure and other logistical arrangements. (Over 180 students from NSIT attended the conference over the three days. The students benefited a lot, by finding out about the recent advancements in the field of software/application development. Apart from attending various technical lectures the students also got_an ‘opportunity to meet many industry representatives. The students were very enthusiastic about contributing to the Open Source Community alter attending the technical talks, Some of the topics that many found interesting were: ‘The Next 100 Years Hlaus Knopper, founder -Knoppix “ICT Challenges of India - M. We are sure each of us ‘must have been fooled at least once by Google. 4. Gmail was used internally for nearly 2 years prior to launch to the public. This gives tho toams an idea about tho lines thoy Should be working on. The third round, scheduled to take place ‘in April or May, deals with the implementation of the proposed ‘idea. One team NSIT made it to this round as well. ‘For those of you who wish to participate next year, here's, a nice way fo earn those brownie points. According to the students who participated, the projects that dealt with computer. architecture were given a preference. It is very important to go ‘through the present works by Intel for understanding their snts. Here's to wishing luck to all the selected teams for rounds... the tae Robowarsis one of the mostly keenly awaited events during Innovision.Froma jam packed amphitheatre with frenzied excitement levels, it's all there to see. So what does it take to make the “invincible” robot? The winners of this event in Innovision, 2008 share their experiences with us. ‘The design aspect of the robot, according to them, holds the key to the game. You may have the best equipment, but it's to no avail if you are not armed with an efficient and powerful design. While designing, itis very important to take care for © the clearance of the tyres. Once you have that, you can start acquiring the required products. The first and foremost nead is a good motor. These aro available easily from Chandni Chowk market. There is a requirement for two motors, namely for running the wheels, and for handling the weapon. The specifications of a motor may be in terms of RPM or torque. For robowars, torque is the imperative requirement, for the wheels. The motor required for the weapon depends on the type of weapon used. For weapons like Hammers, a motor of high RPM is needed, Whereas, for weapons like cam shaft, or a strong magnet, used to lift other robots, a motor of high torque is, essential. Other apparatus such as switches, tyres and wires can be acquired from local markets, such as the Tilak Nagar market. The robot has to be controlled using a remote. This can be easily assembled on a thin plywood sheet. The base material with which the robot is made haste be chosen carefully. Its preferable to use iron sheets as they are cheap and easily available from welding shops in the Mayapuri Junk market. Aluminium sheets and wooden planks should not be used as they are easily damaged. ‘The drive systems commonly used is the differential system with two motors, because of practicality and simplicity in design. A belt drive, as used in tanks, can also be used. The battery eliminator can be procured from physics labs or can be custom made from any electrical shop. 24V, 10 Ampere aro usually sot as, maximum in the event rules, Armed with all these useful bits of info, and of course some great cheering from your friends, hope your robot will “beat the pulp" out of the rest of them all anh SOwoOw As told to us by Gaurav Bhardwaj, (MPA ard year) ‘Member, winning team, Robowars - 2008 9 N N 0 S ji G N 0 7 ere Ul) iettnsft iran tetc tant’ actin workshop gave us a general overview of MATLAB required for parallel port eee ee eee ee ee oe eae es Srpipege lege ers ee ee E sees ees ee pe ee time, even if the same code was run. Moreover, his steady and meaningful participation in extra curricular activities has marked him out as an exceptional student, Here is what this NSITian has to say on the subject of placements: ‘Well to begin with - the placements are really atest of characteriand then there is Ick. One ofthe things that propective students rust do is hone their sklls/increase their Imowledge base about any taining! project that they have done in their three years. They must know the background as well as the latest technology update on the same. ‘The second thing is to be fully prepared for HR quostions... the normal twistoxs. ‘They always ask the same questions -“tell us about yourself why do u want io join. fete etc. But phrase in different ways - “at do find good in our company that you want to join it (essentially why do you Want to join us and what do you know about us? ), how are you suited to us (again- what are your strengths/tell us about yourself)" (One should remain confident. The body language is supremely important because the HR poople aro psychology stu 30 they love to see hand movements, sitting posture, eye movements and contact. They just look for hints. PARIKH SOOD_ ICE, 4thYoar Placement : Schlumberger Placements: ‘The fourth year batch managed to get some very good placements this year. Gaurav Puri, MPAE/03 got placed in Grail Research and we at Crosslinks managed to get some advice from him for the college students. Gaurav personally ‘wants to pursue an MBA for further studies or wants to join a business research firm. Horo is what he has to say: ‘The placement season serves as a great experience to learn and grow. It provides a perfect platform to gain a lot professionally. Usually most companies take a written test nd then interviews aro held. The types of questions asked vary between companies. The major recruiters ike ‘TOS,IBM,Accenture n many more have basically 2-8 rounds. ‘The first round is al about your core tech questions + some C/C++ questions. The second round is HR ( you can find typical HR questions on the nt) and some questions like why this company ete?..algo if you are siting for a company whichis out of your core stream they'll ask you the reason for the same. On the ofher hand the analytics and business research companies like Inductis, Evalueserve, and Grail Reasearch etc will give you puzzles and case studies to solve in both rounds. The focus hereis more on the approach to the problem rather than the solution. Forgetting a good placement, its very important be street smart but in any case, to be able to appear for writen testa by all companies, itis necessary to maintain a percentage of 10% and more. This serves as a qualifying condition for appearing inthe vritton exam of most companies. Anything more than this adds value to your resume, Certain subjects in the college curriculum should be given importance. For MPAE students who want to go into core companies subjects like Manufacturing Processes (1 and Il, CNG and Automation, Metrology, Manufacturing of Management Systems are the important ones. Apart from this, projects aro important for people aiming for companies in their core field. For mass recruiters projects serve as points on your reoume that give them something to ask. So i's better to have done a couple of good projects. However for the analytics or business research companies they don't matter. 1 would advice the juniors to maintain a good zesume by doing competent projects and concentrating on core areas like C, (C++ and the main subjects oftheir stream. (GAURAV PURI MPA, 4th Year Placernent : Grail Research The Buck Stops Here... Thave had a wonderful experience sitting for placements and trying my luck in making it big. As far as choice of companies is concerned, I just went along with the crowd and tried my hand at all big names in the field. The first and. foremost step is preparing a sound resume; it goes along ‘well with the companies. From my understanding, it is very important to know the basics of subjects very well. Different companies have different preferences as far as the subject of importance is concerned. Companies like STM stress on analog electronics, whereas, Freescale, gives more importance to digital electronics. Of course, there are companies like Texas Instruments which give a choice ‘between both, It is also essential to have your facts clear with regard fo your projects. In my opinion, for a good job profile a post graduation or higher studies holds the key. It definitely gives an edge over the others, with regard to an additional degree. Where practical taining is concerned, the exposure one gets unquestionably helps in choosing the area of expertise in ‘which your career may unfold further. ‘The always relevant big debate about book smartness and street smartness boils down to these placements interviews, From my experience, book smartness definitely rules for hardware companies, but there is no denial to the fact that street smartness also helps. The aggregate percentage ‘which you acquire in college is required only to clear eligibility criterion, which is generally 70-75%. Otherwise, in the interviews, percentage would not matter at all. All that ‘one requires is good concepts. For people who get scared by the very prospect for an interview thero is nothing to worry for they are really not checking your communication skills. ‘The rest is all up to how well you can tackle with the field of ‘your choice. in hardware companies, co-curricular activities really don't make a difference. You just need to do well in ‘your company tests. ‘To all my juniors, my advice would be to decide early what to do in future, and then go for it when the time comes! I's very important to know what you want to do early on. That gives ‘you an advantage. If you want to go for post graduation right after college it helps you in deciding what teachers to work under; the kind of projects that you should be doing and basically build your resume appropriately. ‘KUSHA GOYAL ‘ECE, 4th Year Placement :Freescale ‘The Placement session has been a great experience, not only for me but for most of the people I know. Placements teach you a lot - coping up with hard times, taking right decisions handling disappointment, remaining calm and composed through it all, not to mention all the technical knowledge that ‘comes from studying for placements! ‘On amore serious note, placements are a time when it is very important to make the right ‘choices. Hence one should be highly focused about the kind of job one wants, and accordingly sit for the right companies. While high package is always an added bonus, other factors should also be taken into consideration. One should keep one’s career goals in mind and evaluate the particular company accordingly. In my opinion, it is better to have one good job in hand rather than having umpteen useless jobs in the bush. While academic records serve as an eligibility criterion for most of the companies, one should also aim for good projects and a strong resume as they do matter in creating a good first impression. But the factors that really matter are - thorough undexstanding of the subjects, ability to analyze and work out anew problem and good communication skilis.fone is targeting software companies, one should have a thorough understanding of Data Structures, Algorithms, C and G++. My advice to all juniors about to sit for the placement process would be to figure out your Priorities in life, spruce up your resume, solve puzzles and revise your fundamentals. Finally, keep a cool head, and you will surely sail ‘trough placements with flying colours! ‘VIKAS GUPTA COE, 4th Year Placement : Adobe 10 MASTERING THE MASTERS When. preparing to take GRE, to pursue further studies abroad, it is extremely important to be very clear about your aim, considering several aspects like desire to pursue graduate studies, financial aspects (since a lot of expenditure is involved at every step in the process of applying to universities). The most ambiguous question asked is with regard to the sélection criterion of various universities. It ig an amalgam of several aspects which are considered. There is no set criterion for selection. Most importantly, you should have good academic credentials. A good GRE score, TOEFL score and good recommendations fare equally necessary. The overall profile has to be Impressive, not just in one particular department, AAs lar as preparation is concerned, the actual prep requires not more than three months. So the best way 10 approach the exam is to take the date first of all because that's when you really getstartedwith the preparation. As far as the quantitative section of GRE goes, not much groundwork is requited; it ean be left for the last 10 to 18 days, The word lists can easily be juggled between the college schedules targeting an average of one list per day. BARRON's is sufficient for GRE preparation. But ityou want to ge for some good test practice, a lot of material is available online like KAPLAN, PRINCETON REVIEW, and CAMBRIDGE tc. However, you should be thorough with BARRON's before you go for these. So, managing GRE prep with college curriculum should not be a problem. Developing a good reading habit (particularly reading on the computer) is a practice that will help a lot and should be inculcated without, a second thought. Also try to comprehend as many new ‘words as you can while reading. As fax as coaching institutes are concerned, I don’t believe any coaching is necessary for GRE. Projects and research papers are instrumental in building up a good profile. Thus, emphasis should be laid on these since the early years. I, for instance, started off with projects in my nd year of college. A good summer internship in a company of repate always helps, ‘To my junior NSITians,I can only say that believe in ‘yourself and give your best because NSIT is good enough to get you anywhere you want in the world. Work hard and you ‘will definitely be rewarded. = GUNJAN AGARWAL Currently completing her VIll semester in the MPAE division. at NSIT, she has received MS-Mechanical adrait from MIT. How to bell the CAT ‘The thing to remember about the MS/PHD is that it ie highly research-centric, especially abroad. And by research, I mean “personal involvement and experimentation with the current issues in some spetific technical subfield’. Your research work proves your motivation, ability for hard work, and determination, giving a much better indication of success in a graduate course:than academic brilliance. The GRE should be treated like a qualifying exam - you are being tested for a basic level of adequacy, and a acore of 1400/1600 or above is generally enough for that. ‘You should have an honest and clear idea about your ‘own qualifications as an applicant, temperament for research, and the purpose of the Masters or PAD degree, This, along with some guidance from Course-wise University rankings (eg: USNews), student forums (eg; Edulix), and personally conducted research (eg: talking to people in the industry, consulting your seniors, looking at research papers published by department faculty and students etc.) would help you narrow down the lst of possible universities to a manageable 10-15. T think this is"the most important thing: to start exploring research areas in your field, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. This would help you-better identify areas for future specialization during graduate study; the research.work itgelf meant a lot to the admissions committee, and better qualifies you for assistantship in related research groups at your chosen university. I would advise the following: Pick something (anything!) that catches your fancy, do some preliminary reading, get someone to guide you if possible, start small, and remember that everything counts as experience. Publications, internships ete are secondary - these will come only if you invest the necessary time in research. I would like to remind my jiniore at NSIT that the university admissions process is a black box - there is no single point on your resume that can be guaranteed to get you in. What you must do is to’ develop-a good holistic package representing yourself (Academics, GRE scores, Research work, = Publications... Extra-Curriculars, Recommendations, Internships, Social Work... in no ‘particular order of preference) ,where a lack in something ‘can be made up for by excellence in another. = ANISH JOHNSON Currently completing his VIII semester in the COE division at NSIT, he has received MS-CS admits from Stanford and Camegie Mellon university. ‘A,focused preparation time of one year is more than enough for GAT: Hence preparations should ideally start around December er January. But the sooner a habit of zeading of novels, magaaines, newspapers(especially the editorials) is framed, the better it aids in improving the comprehension skills. Next comes the Coaching, Now’ there iso fixed rule which says that coaching is essential for clearing CAT. It can be cleared even without coaching. But when the stakes are pretty high and ‘competition so tough, any kind of edge over the other students helps and coaching provides just that, along with a proper path towalk along and not go astray. ‘Acsimple method to improve vocabulary is to learn new words each day and write them down somewhere. Next day along with the new words don't forget to revise the complete set of old words collected till date. On the weekends take a break from the new words and instead spend more time revising the words accumulated so far. A good vocabulary is a prerequisite for good comprehension along with a good speed of reading. Quant and DI don't need any special treatment and can be ‘cracked easily once all the basies are clear. SPRATIK SETH Pratik Sethi is from the NSIT passout batch of 2006, currently pursuing an MBA at IIM Lacknow. ul / \ DOUBLE CROSS K ‘The bitter wind rushed through the godforsaken valley, a biting reminder of the storm overhead. The. valley was deserted of life, and the pallid air of death hung thick over it. On a lonely corner of a lonely. peak stood four men in black, poised at attention, for all the world as though the next moment could be their las. They were men of The Guardians, the elite force of military guards whose sworn duty it was to protect the land and its people. For nigh onto ten centuries they had guarded the land, and were revered and honored for it. Every boy aspired to join the ranks of these dangerous men some day, to someday prove his worth in battle. For there never was any dearth of battles. The land was surrounded by enemies on all sides, and that was one of the reasons for the four men standing on the lonely peak. Honored they were, jasper knew, yet there still remained a thing that puzzied him greatly. And that ‘was the symbol emblazoned across his breast, his and every other Guardian. Two bones crossing over each other to form a cadaverous cross ; the double cross. He had reasoned and questioned about it in his days of training, but the pervicacious attitude that prevailed in any old institution had defeated him, and he was no closer to satisfying his curlosity than he had been when he begun. Whenever he looked at the symbol, it was bereft of feeling for him; he felt empty. Not that it really mattered. What mattered now was that- “You're thinking too much,” Gregor finished his thoughts for him. Jasper did not like Gregor. Brash of tongue and mirthless in spirit, he was the epitome of the personality that Jasper loathed. Yet he was skilled with the sword and quick of the mind, qualities that endeared him fo his superiors. It wouldn't do tohave a tif with a man who was to be your companion in war, Jasper brooded. Although he did wish that Gregor would think along those lines sometimes. “And yet, the problem with you is that you haven't thought enough,” Gregor continued opining. think this is going to be a good day for the invaders". “What!” Jasper whirled around, startled by the sudden turn in the events, "Cut the jest, Gregor. There are no signs of any attackers, The valley is as dead as your mother in her grave.” “Bh, so it is" Gregor agreed, a smirk slinking across his face. “But have you thought that maybe these invaders aze alzeady in the land, and in this valley itself, ready to launch upon our venerable institution?” “It you know where they are, then say 50,” Jasper said brusquely. The others walked upto the two of them, swords in hand, no doubt sensing the tension in the air. Ominous as that was, Jasper gave them no mind; all his attention was on Gregor, “Where are they?” he repeated harshly, walting for the answer he was dreading. And that was when he felt the first sword thrust through him. Gasping in shock, he fell upon his knees, the world spinning around him. In all his dreams, he could not have imagined that this could happen. “They are right here;” Gregor said solemnly, as another thrust went through Jaspers chest, taking his breath and life from him. "We have taken this great institution of yours. Now the land will be ours, and the wealth and riches as well, Our mission is complete. And I hope I've fulfilled your wish.” “Whats that, traitor?” Jasper wheezed, as blood gurgled out of his mouth. Gregor’s face lit up with a mocking grin, as though surprised Jasper would ask. “Why, I hope T've finally given the double cross a meaning for you. ae aco 13 7 2 « Word: Hecke Dictionary: To harass (a public speaker, performer, etc) with impertinent questions, gibes, ofthe like,” NsIfsThe reception normally given to anyone brave ‘enough to take the stage.
