En esta ciudad nunca nací... en ella vivo
y es después de mi casa, mi más cerca na piel,
por sus poros respiran mis angu stias,
por sus venas se drenan mis reductos.
Esta es mi ciudad y entre sus árbo les
mis pájaros so lían sembrar sus trinos,
esta ciudad me protegía, sus calles
y sus casas me abrazaban
co mo mi abuela los domingo s.
Ahora las campa nas ya no suenan
y las banderas ondea n siempre trizadas,

t y las mujeres hace n un esfuerzo
por no ceder al impu lso de la pérd ida.
En mi ciudad los niños eran ánge les
en su camino para hacerse humanos,
pero ahora, de golpe se convierten
cuando aún no alcanzan ni a perder sus alas.
Ya na nací en esta ciudad,
pero en ella vivo
y miro entre sus calles confundidas las pa lomas
con el paso indeciso de los ebrios.
En estas ca lles co nvivía el mendigo
y el poeta, el vibra nte muchacho
y el anciano enfermo, el comerciante,
la prostituta y el enano ; el médico,
el moralista y el profeta;
mas cada uno respetaba su terreno.

I was never born in thi s city .. . in her l live
and it is, after my house, my closest skin,
through its pores my anguishes breathe,
my defenses drain through its veins.
Thi s is my city and between its trees
my birds used to plant their chant ,
this c ity used to protect me, its streets
and its ha uses emb raced me
like my gra ndmo ther on Sundays.
Now the bells do n't to ll
and the tlags always wave wo rn,
and wo men wo rk very hard
in arder not to give into the impulse of dispa ir.
In my cit y the children used to be angels
on the road of becoming hum ans,
but now, suddenly they change
when they haven 't even lost their wings .
I was n't born in this city,
altho ugh I live in her
and 1 see in its streets confused doves
with the uncert ain steps of the drunk .
In these streets used to coexist the poor
and the poet, the vibra nt yo ung man
the s ick old ma n, the merchant,
the prostitute and the midget; the doctor,
the moral ist and the pro phet ;
each one respected each ot hers ' borders.
