Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Life Cycle Story

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the life cycles of different living organisms.

D. Develop models to illustrate the unique and diverse life cycles of organisms other than humans

Technology Standard Addressed: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing,
achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Students:

C. use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate
their learning in a variety of ways.

D. understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to

choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to
explore emerging technologies.

Selected Technology Tool: Powerpoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Some of the technologies from the UDL lab could benefit my
students in completing this activity. For students who have difficulty typing on a computer, they can
use narration throughout their whole Powerpoint story. For students who may have difficulty with
putting their thoughts together, they can use the computer software that allows them to type in
what they want to say and it’ll make predictions for them. Exercise ball chairs are great for students
with ADHD that have difficulty sitting stationary in a regular chair.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson would be done near the end of our unit on life cycles. To prove their knowledge,

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
students will be creating a life cycle story on an animal of their choice, after getting approval from
the teacher. This activity would take a couple days to complete. On the first day, students will decide
what animal they want to research and begin collecting information on their animal using the
internet and various sources in the library. On the second day, students will begin to put together
their story on the Powerpoint software. Students are free to choose what theme they want, as long
as their text can still be seen. Their story must include text an, sounds and pictures on each slide.
On the third day, students will present their stories to the class like a “movie”. Students are
expected to become an expert on their animal and must be prepared to be the teacher as they go
through their presentation with the class. Students will be graded on presentation and the
information they researched. Students should be able to have a general understanding of the life
cycles of various unique animals.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson, I think it would allow students to increase their
learning experience by allowing them to be in charge of their learning by creating this project.
Students are given an opportunity to be independent and show what they’ve learning about life
cycles and apply it to their own animal as they research more information. I think this activity would
be a great end of the unit activity for students to put all of the information they’ve learned
throughout the unit and create something unique they can keep.
