The occupation names in Travelbook (Seyahatname)


of Evliya Çelebi

Abstract —Travelbook (Seyahatname) of Evliya Çelebi has undoubtedly been seen as one of the most important literary work of 17th
century. A lot of language materials about visited places' various social and cultural features,such as historical, architectural and
demographic structure, are appeared in the work. Between all of these materials, occupation names which are seen in the work took our
attention. As it is known, occupation names have a big importance in point of reflecting the social, cultural, economic, military, political
livesof society. Occupation names are important language datas to transfer this significant part of society life from generation to
generation. Travelbook (Seyahatname) of Evliya Çelebi is fairly rich in terms of these language data. A transcription text of Travelbook
(Seyahatname) of Evliya Çelebi's Topkapı Palace Library Bağdat 304 numbered composition which was written by Robert Dankoff is based
on in this study. After we have determine the occupation names in the text, we classified them by considering their workplaces and
contents. At the end of the classification, we encountered a big number of occupation names, such as military service, handicrafts, food and
beverage artificers, clothing, depository, agriculture and husbandry, musicianship and making music instruments, maritime,
transportation, commerce, management, administrative services, state government, health, horoscope and astrology. With this report, we
aimed to demystify socio-cultural and socio-economic structures of the period while assessing the occupation names in Evliya Çelebi's
period as a language data.

1. Introduction

Travelbook (Seyahatname) of Evliya Çelebi, written in 17th century, is a rich treasure which contains not only Ottoman lands but also living people
in that region, cultures, dialects, regional accents. In consequence of it’s rich content, it has been discussed in lots of studies. We address the issue of
occupation names appear in Travelbook (Seyahatname) of Evliya Çelebi.
Murat IV has told to organise a craftsmen union in Istanbul before he set a military operation to Bagdad. Evliya Çelebi had given a great place to
mentioned craftsmen union. He had written down names of cratfsmen groups and of occupation names one by one in his book. We extracted and listed
all of the occupation names by referring these records. After that, we put meanings of these occupation names forward under cover of his own explaina-
tions and various dictionaries (they are mentioned in bibliography) that we used. After we wrote occupation names we classified them thematicaly. As a
result of this classify, we established twenty five occupation names that are not included in any of these classes and we grouped them under ―Other
Occupations‖ title. According to these findings, occupation names in Seyahatname are as follows:

ases: Night watchman.
asesbaşı: Chief of police, marshal.
bâğbân: Gardener, night watchman.
bâğçevân: Gardener.
cündî: Cavalier.
çarkacı: Spearhead.
çorbacı: Officer of Janissaries, officer who is equal to lieutenant.
dîde-bân: Watchman, guard, sentry, police station.
ebezâde: Arrow craftsman.
eşkinci: Cavalryman who usually goes voyages.
fişekci: A person who produces/sells cartridge.
fişengci: A person who produces/sells cartridge.
fitilci: A person who produces/sells candlewick.
furun yapıcı: An artificer who produces portable cooker for army.
gedelecci: A person who makes cases for holding arrows.
hartacı: Cartopgrapher.
kalkancı: One who makes/sells shield.
