36. Find the term values of Carbon atom in its ground state(1s2 2s2 2p2 ) and in its
excited states given by 1s2 2s2 p3s and 1s2 2s2p3 .
37.Of the atoms with Z ≤ 10 , which ones have odd parity?
38. Consider the hamiltonian for Li
3 3 3 X 3
X p~i .~pi 3e2 X 1 e2 X 1
H= − +
i=1 2m 4π0 j=1 rj 4π0 i=1 j>i rij

where ri ’s are the distances of the i-th electron from the Lithium nucelus and rij is the
distance betwee i-th and j-th electron. ( The spin-orbit coupling has been neglected).
Find the energy of Li ground state (1s2 2s) in terms of J and K integrals.
39. Generalise the previous problem to the case of n- electron atom. Assume the
ground state is given by the determinant

u1 (1) u2 (1) . . . un (1)

u1 (2) u2 (2) . . . un (2)

. . . . . .

. . . . . .
. . . . . .

u1 (n) u2 (n) . . . un (n)

40. Using the Thomas-Fermi model for a neutral atom, obtain the Z dependence of
the following:
(a) average distance of an electron from the nucleus;
(b) average kinetic energy of the electron;
(c) total ionization energy of the atom.
If you are good at numerically evaluating integrals get the value after perfomingthe
integration. Use tables given in the standard books ( for example in Bransden and
Joachain ).
