ID fan motor -3A tripped on Percentage Differential Over Current fault protection. ID fan motor stator winding insulation failure.

Condition Prior to failure ( Please state the past performance , history )


Unit-3 was under running condition on 597.6 MW. Motor tripped on motor start. ID fan motor-3A Load current is 273.96 Amps
Motor full load current=369 A
Observations
1.ID fan's Motor Differential Relay sensed the fault and tripped the motor on Percentage Differential Over Current fault protection.
2.No increase or Spikes in Motor load current trend.
3.Generator Load reduced from 597.6 MW to 356.5 MW.

Why Why Analysis ?

1. Why ID FAN Motor-3A


tripped? A. ID FAN motor-3A's Motor
Differential protection relay detected fault and tripped the motor on
Percentage Differential over current protection.

2. Why MDR acted? A. Motor Stator


winding Internal Fault occurred

3. Why fault detected by relay?


1.Insulation failure between phases Y-E fault
currents recorded in relay are
DIa=0.00A DIb=2.49 A DIc=0.02A.

4. what type of fault occurred in motor?


A. After opening motor inspection cover it it found Y Phase winding insulation punctured.

5. Why Y-Phase winding punctured?


A. one of core supporting strip got removed from core and come in contact between
rotor and stator caused Y-phase winding insulation damage.

Action Taken
ROOT CAUSE: INSULATION FAILURE DUE TO AGEING & WEDGE LOOSENESS.
1. After taking PTW (Permit no:4002916535) measured the insulation resistance and winding resistance of Motor from panel end.
IR: RYB-E= 0.0 Mohms with 5KV applied voltage & winding resistance: RY=0.32 ohms YB=0.32 ohms BR=0.31 ohms
2. From the above results it is predicted stator winding's insulation
punctured.
3. For further inspection dis connected the motor power cable and measured the winding insulation resistance. Meggar values: R-E:4.5 Gohms
Y-E:0.0 Gohm B-E: 2.24 Gohm.
4. Replaced the motor with new indian make CG motor.

Recommendations to avoid recurrence

1.It is strictly recommended to replace the Chinese ID fan motor with indian make Motor due to insulation failures observed in all ID motors.
2.Strictly Maintain the voltage 11.5 KV for ID fan motor opertation.
3.During Overhauling, Wedge & Rotor Bar Inspection & Strenghten the Winding.
