PRELIMINARY – HANDLING AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1) Main parts of Metal Detector
• Robust frame (housing, welded C-Steel)
• High sensitive magnetic field coil system
• Control unit – build in or self-depended

2) Handling
Mechanic shocks can remove or damage high sensitive magnetic field coil system, which can cause
dysfunction of equipment.
When transporting and handling, never pass lifting or supporting equipment through the metal
detector aperture.
Tested products should be leaded through detector aperture without physical contact.
Used packaging materials should be free of from metal impurities.

3) Testing and maintenance

Drago Electronica recommends testing with test sample Metal Balls to ensure correct functioning of
the Metal Detector within regular intervals, not only at changing vital parameters.
Cleaning of the Metal Detector should be carried out at regular intervals, depends on products and
environments.

4) Safety instructions
We designed and produced our equipment to be safe. Equipment can be used only in accordance
with manufacturer instructions.

Caution

If the unit is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer the

protection provided by the unit may be impaired.

5) Power source
Metal detector is connected to main power source line, or a source, which cover low power
consumption with over-voltage protection (dislocated from high power cables, grounding etc…).

Caution

Supply wires dimensions should be at least 3 x 0,75 mm2.

Caution

There shall be included a switch or circuit breaker in the building installation. It shall
be marked as the disconnecting device for the equipment and should meet the
requirements of the IEC60947 standard.
The switch or circuit breaker should be near the equipment.

Electric Arc Welding is not allowed on the line where incorporated metal detector on the basic metal
construction is!
Max length of connecting cable for self-depended control unit is 10m.
Metal Detector should not be placed close to any source of emitted electromagnetic interference.

6) Metal free zone

Size of metal free zone depends on version of detector, aperture height and assumed operating
sensitivity.
For instance for tunnel version of metal detector metal free zone should be two heights of aperture
behind and front side of metal detector in operating direction.
For all versions of GRS metal detector producer specifies necessary area for metal free zone in
appendix of instruction manual.

7) Measurement cable
This is an antennal cable that connects the sensor system of metal detector with electronic control
unit in box if it is self-depended (separated) from metal detector.
Cables should be placed into protective iron pipes and should be dislocated from high power cables.
Max. length of cable is 10m.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR A METAL DETECTOR
Every Drago Electronica metal detector is thoroughly tested and precisely calibrated before it leaves the
production line.
Sensitivity of the detector depends on its model and aperture size as well as proper installation and
environmental conditions. Electromagnetic field of the sensor extends beyond its aperture, therefore any
movement of metallic parts, various electric, electronical, electrostatic and other outside influences on the
magnetic field can cause disturbances. Rollers, drive chains, covers, etc. can cause short circuits which
results in decreased detector sensitivity due to false detections. Vibrations also affect the sensitivity of the
detector. Shock absorbers that are installed during production in Drago Electronica absorb the vibrations
usually caused by transport devices. Proper operating of the metal detector depends on many factors and
therefore proper installation is very important. If the sensor can not be placed ideally the following information
can be helpful.

CABLE-CONECTION
Metal detector have to be connected via shielded cables. The shielding must be
grounded on the supplying side only.

WARNING – WELDING
Prior to any kind of welding on the construction of the conveyor belt or on the construction of the detector
itself you have to disconnect the detector from main power supply in order to avoid damaging the detector.
Before starting welding cover the conveyor belt to avoid welding beads which could burn into the belt and
contaminate it with metal.

METAL-FREE ZONE
The size of the metal-free zone is determined by the type and size of the sensor's aperture. Metal-free zone
is used to determine the distance between the detector and any metal objects. This is especially true for
metal parts that are moving or vibrating. If a proper size of a metal-free zone can not be achieved the
detectors' sensitivity has to be reduced in order to avoid false detections. Electrical wires, motors with
fluctuating magnetic field and other factors that can alter a magnetic field can also have impact on the metal-
free zone even if they are installed beyond its border.

MATERIALS
Magnetic materials (especially magnetic steel) usually have greater influence on a magnetic field than
nonmagnetic materials (austenite steel, aluminum and others). In other words nonmagnetic metal materials
usually cause less disturbances compared to the magnetic ones and can therefore be installed somewhat
closer to the sensor if necessary. Nonmetal materials and electrical insulators naturally have no effect on the
sensor.

FACTORS THAT ARE INFLUENCING THE FIELD OF THE SENSOR

Vibrating and moving metal parts like rollers, metal plates and covers must be placed outside of metal-free
zone. Supporting rollers in the metal-free zone are particularly problematic, because they are causing short
circuits that are appearing and disappearing as a function of vibration and temperature. Such problem can be
solved by electrically isolating potential short circuits or by welding them together.
Conveyor systems leading into or out of the metal detector system must not have any electrical or
mechanical contact with that system.
Electric motors and frequency converters have to be connected via shielded cables. The shielding must be
grounded on the supplying side only.

EXPOSURE TO THE SUN

The detector must not be exposed to direct solar radiation. Any other one side heat sources also have a
negative effect on the operating of the detector. For optimal operating of the detector it is recommended to
have as few temperature fluctuations as possible. If the detector is installed outdoors it requires a metal-free
enclosure (e.g. a wooden one) or some other form of protection against direct solar radiation.

VIBRATIONS
The conveyor system must not cause any pronounced vibrations that could be transferred to the sensor. It
can be very helpful if the sensor has separate construction. The feet of the detector must be firmly anchored
to the ground in order to prevent movement. The sensor is mounted on shock absorbers. Shock absorbers
damp mechanical vibrations, provide electrical isolation and prevent distortion of the senor itself. Conveyor
belt, the products that are being tested and running boards must pass through the sensor without touching it.

c/ folgueroles, 15 pral. 1ª – 08022 barcelona (españa) tf. 3493 346 60 12 www.dragoelectronica.com ana@dragoelectronica.com
CONVEYOR BELT
Conveyor belt must be antistatic. Conveyor belt must not contain any metal. Metal can be introduced into the
belt due to nearby welding or grinding. If a conveyor belt needs to be cut in order to install a metal detector
the adherent layer must not contain any metal.

WARNING!
Electric Arc Welding is not allowed on the line where incorporated metal detector on the basic metal
construction is!!!

PREPARATION FOR OPERATION

1) Metal detector is connected to main power source line, so when you turn it on the Metal Detector is
automaticlaly turned on too (Metal detector is in operation mode). Check if indicators L1 and L10
(Operation) are on.

2) Metal detector is turned on and ready to operate and we can turn on the transport system.

OPERATING AND PROCEEDING

1) Device is working undisturbed until metal fragment comes into metal free zone. Then electronic
system reacts automatically and start alarming process (A1 signal or extra exterior acoustic or optical
alarm – as option), stopping the transporting system or starting the rejecting mechanism, depends on
type.

2) In metal free zone find the metal fragment and remove it. Press RESET key to reactivate detector. Exception is
detector with automatic rejection.

3)

2.1 Additional explanations

2.1.1 Setting transmitter power of generator

Power of high-frequency generator together with amplification stages is setting in percentage from 0-100%.
Lower percentage means lower transmitter power. Higher percentage means higher warming on cooling
object of generator.

2.1.2 Setting generator frequency

We can set generator frequency with 100HZ step form 0Hz to 1MHz. If frequency is not correct and detector
is connected, there will come to warm through of cooling object. Also power resistor will start to warming and
after approximately 1 minute will warm through..

2.1.3Setting phase
Phase is important part in detection of different materials, because they give different response by different
phase when they convey through detector. We can set phase with 1° step from 0° to 180° . We have to be
cautious, because each detector has its own optimal phase.

2.1.4 Setting relay delays

Each relay works independently. We can define different delay to each relay. We can set delay with 100ms
step form 0mn to 5000ms.

2.1.5 Setting relay impulse

Each relay works independently. We can define different impulse to each relay. We can set length of impulse
with 100ms step from 0ms to 30000ms. The setting 0ms means constantly set relay after detection. We can
reset relay after pressing button reset on electrical board. Relay 2 works negative. When detection appears,
relay 2 resets. In the case electronics stops working relay 2 resets.

2.1.6 Cleaning number of detections

Detector has built in detection counting. If electronics lose network supply or we reset it by hand, the number
of detections still keeps its value. So sometimes it is necessary to clean number of detections. We can do
that if we hold on the key »OK-SELECT« for approximately 5 seconds.

2.1.7 Beep
When the impulse of relay 1 is set on 0ms (after detection stays set) beep sounds equally (PPPP). If in the
meantime there come to another detection, the sound of beep changes.
2 beeps of sound and 2 beeps of pause (PP__PP__PP).
