How to survive five hours of travel every day

Isle of Wight to Salisbury

If you didn’t have to do the journey for too long, you would think it was lovely being on the water.
There are certain periods of the year when you see the sunrise and sunset from the boat and that is
amazing. But during the winter, when the whole journey is in the dark, it’s not so much fun.

I’ve just left my job, but I used to get up at 5.40am and leave the house at 6.15am to drive the 10
minutes to Cowes, where I would catch the ferry to Southampton, which would take 23 minutes. Then
I’d get on a bus to Southampton station, and then catch a train to Salisbury. I would get into the office
just after 8.30am. On the way home, because of the times of the trains and the boats, the journey
was a bit longer, but I would get home about 8pm.

On the boat in the mornings, I generally tried to get back to sleep for 20 minutes. On the first two
boats in the morning, everyone gets on and doesn’t say a word, it’s really quiet. If you catch the
7.15am ferry, it’s more social and people are more awake. On the train, you see the same people
every day, especially school kids, and you hear their conversations about football and girlfriends and
their problems. It’s quite funny listening in – it’s a bit like your own personal soap opera. The rest of
the time you check your iPad and phone – I read the newspaper on the iPad, go on Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram, and check my personal emails. I got quite good at Candy Crush, and I’d get
the news about some TV programmes, so BBC iPlayer1* was simply wonderful.

The worst part was never being at home for my children’s after-school things, or to help them with
their homework. You can also miss going for a drink after work or other social things, because even if
you stay for just half an hour, it means trying to get home when the boat and trains are less frequent,
and your journey suddenly becomes three hours.

We tried to sell the house last year with the intention of leaving the island. It’s an easy decision to
make in the winter, but during the summer when the kids are on the beach and we’re enjoying all of
the fantastic things about being on the Isle of Wight, it’s not so easy. We didn’t get a buyer so we
decided it would be best not to move. I left my job a couple of weeks ago, and I’m looking for another
one. Ideally, I only want an hour to travel to work, but I’ll probably have to start looking at jobs in
London as well.

HOTEL REVIEWS

Guest 1
I stayed here for a conference in November 2015. The line for check in was long and slow. The woman who
checked me in was unfriendly. The room was very nice and very clean. The hotel is just a couple of blocks from
Union Square, which has great shopping and restaurants.

Guest 2
My first visit to San Francisco from Australia and this won't be my last! I spent 4 nights at the Hilton and this
was my home away from home. After a 14-hour flight across the Pacific the check in was incredibly friendly and
welcoming and understanding, gave me some great recommendations on things to see and do. I had a great
view from my room, which was modern and well furnished, the bed was really comfortable.

Guest 3
I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights for a conference. Overall, it was a wonderful stay. The location is very central
in San Francisco. You're a very near Union Square and downtown shopping, and countless delicious
restaurants surround you. Service at Hotel Nikko is what I would expect from a 4-5 star hotel. All staff members
we interacted with were professional and accommodating. My main critique of this property is the value for
money aspect. I found the rooms to be comparatively small and plain compared to similarly marketed hotels.

Guest 4
This hotel is close to the shopping of Union Square but still reasonably quiet. The hotel is quite fashionable
inside. The room was nicely decorated. I appreciated the mini fridge on request. I did notice some trash in one
of the drawers, but for the most part, the room was clean. The WIFI is free if you book online I think. The hotel
is technologically equipped as there is a minicomputer built into the room desk that you can browse (internet for
a fee, general hotel info for free) and also a phone number that you can text to talk to hotel staff.

Guest 5
Me and three friends spent 2 nights in this Holiday Inn. Location was very good, close to Stamford Bridge,
which was our main target for the trip. The reception lady gave us a very warm welcome. Rooms were quite
good. Not spacious but enough room for 2 friends in separate beds. Our room did not have refrigerator, which
was a bit of disappointment. Free WIFI was included, which is a must these days. The value of the hotel was
very good, compared to many other hotels in London. I would come again for a quick trip to London

Guest 6
I stayed three nights in a one-bedroom suite. First time at this hotel, normally stay at Hilton Tower Bridge but
this is my new favourite Hotel in London. Beautiful reception area, wonderful staff at check-in. The first suite I
was given was rather dark but they quickly found me another with larger windows and lots more light. Thank
you!
