I INTRODUCTION

Guillain Barre Syndrome is a rare but serious condition of

the peripheral nervous system which means that the bodys
own immune system attacks the nerves outside of the brain
and spinal cord. This condition was named after two or three
French doctor who first discovered the condition in 1916. Mr.
George Guillain and Mr. Jean Alexander Barre.

This disorder usually lead to muscle weakness, sensory loss,

dysautonomias or some combination of the three. The body of a
peripheral nerve cells body lies either in or very close to the
spinal cord. The nerve communicates by sending signals down a
long, thin extension called an axon. These axon transmit signals
from the body of the nerve cells to make the muscle in order to
make muscles contract and send signals from sensory receptors
to the cell body in order to allow us to feel. GBS is caused by
the body’s immune system attacking the peripheral nerves. The
fact that the syndrome usually comes on after an infection. The
fact that the syndrome usually comes on after an infection has
led us to suspect that at a molecular level, some infectious
agents look like parts of the nervous system. This causes the
immune system to mistake look like parts of the nervous
syndrome. This causes the immune system to make the identity
of peripheral nerves, thinking that parts of the nerves are an
infection which results to our immune system to release
antibodies that attack the peripheral nerves.
GBS affects an individual person depends on where the
antibodies attack the nerve. For this reason, GBS is perhaps
best thought of as a family disorder which can cause different
kinds of problem.
This disease is not common, affecting only one or two per
100,000 people. This disease is most common in adults and in
male.

II OBJECTIVES:

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to discuss the disease proper and underlying
causes.
2. To identify ways of dealing with patient with the said
disease

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. To fully assess the patient and be able to identify the
corresponding management.
2. To monitor patietnts progress in the cause of treatment.

III SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

A. EDUCATION
This is to provide information from the students about
the disease and its management. This will allow students to
become aware and equip with proper interventions about
the disease process.
B. PRACTICE
The study will provide knowledge and skills to colleagues
once they encounter GBS on their course of work. This will
also lessen the delay in management if nurses is aware and
knowledgeable when handling the disease

C. RESEARCH
This will provide new studies about interventions/
management about GBS that will help patient on the course
of treatment. This also provides statistics about the disease
to boost our awareness about the disease.
