Our Journey Through the Psalms
Are you reading the Psalms
yet? We will continue our
journey through the Psalms in
August and I encourage
everyone to get better
acquainted with their timeless
hymns that our spiritual
ancestors wrote out of the crucible of their own
experience. I promise you, sooner or later you will find
yourself somewhere in the Psalms! And more
importantly, you will encounter the Living God!
Here are a few excerpts from an article written by
Wayne Jackson about the Psalms:
“The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 lyric
poems. A lyric poem is defined as ‘that which directly
expresses the individual emotions of the poet.’ Religious
lyric poetry reflects the inner feelings of the person
whose soul is stirred by thoughts of God. The Psalms
are thus inspired responses of various individuals to
God’s revelation of Himself in the Old Testament era.”
“The Psalms were composed over a span of about
one thousand years. The earliest was by Moses (Ps. 90)
in the 15th century B.C., and a couple appear to be
contemporary with the Babylonian captivity in the 6th
century B.C. (Ps. 126, 137).”
“The Psalms are quoted more frequently in the New
Testament than any other book of the Old Testament.
There are about 100 direct references or allusions from
the Psalms in the New Testament. The divine
inspiration of the Psalms is strongly affirmed in the New
Testament.”
“The sacred poetry of the religions of ancient
paganism has faded in the dust of oblivion. Scarcely
anyone at all can quote a line of it. And yet the Psalms
are as fresh as if written yesterday. How can this be?
There is but one explanation; they were invigorated by
the Spirit of the Living God. Let us bathe our souls in
this spring of divine truth.”

Advent Devotional Book
The Worship Committee is beginning to compile the
Pisgah Advent Book. If you would like to write
devotions or submit art work for one of the days, please
see or call Wanda Rodgers (873-9411). The deadline is
September 27, but we would like to complete it even
before then if possible.
Our Mission: to worship God,
study the Scripture, practice the
teachings of Jesus.

1): We’ll start on Sunday
morning at 10:00 a.m. with A Special Worship Service
celebrating our Past, Present, and Future. Reverend
Michael Ward, our 24th minister, who served Pisgah
Church for 19 years, will deliver the sermon.
2): At 11:30 a.m., following the Worship Service, we’ll
continue with A Living History Presentation. You’ll stop by
and visit in our Sanctuary, Cemetery, Academy Building,
and on our Property and Grounds, to learn more of
Pisgah’s intriguing story: “As We Were; Who We Are,
and What We Will Become.”
3): Then, we’ll top your day off with time to visit our
Museum, and gather with new and old friends while
enjoying a Box Lunch and listening to, and taking part
in, “A Good Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing.”
4): That’s not all, folks. On Monday, September 7,
2009, we’re planning An Open House from 4 to 6 p.m.
Hostesses will be available in the Church Sanctuary, the
Cemetery, and our temporary Museum in the Academy
Building to answer your questions.
5): Finally, at 6:30 p.m. The Church and Community
Club will co-sponsor a Pot Luck Picnic, which will be
followed by….
6): A great Talent Show!

Mary Shepherd Circle
Mary Shepherd Circle will meet for its first session
of 2009-2010 on September 1, the first Tuesday of the
month, at 10:00a.m. We will focus on a study of Joshua,
prayer and support of members of our church, and social
fun. All women are invited to join us. Bring your older
daughters, your mothers, your women friends, and
yourself and join us for all ten meetings or just whenever
it is possible. We look forward to seeing you!
