CHARACTERIZATION

One of the biggest problems of Santa Barbara NCHS is students dropping out from their classes. This
year is quite challenging, SY 2017-2018 was a real challenge in terms of students’ drop-out rate. SBNCHS
has a total enrollment 4574 students from Grades 7-12. A total of 17 or 3.71% of our students, 10
males and 7 females, dropped out from school due to different reasons.

1. The advisers of these students conducted home visitation, personal interviews, and monitored
the attendance of the students., 4 or 40% male students were addicted to playing computer
games specifically LOL, thus, they feel sleepy when they attend classes and eventually decided
dropping out from class. The adviser conducted an interview and home visitation in their
parent’s home. The result of these investigation led them to knowing the reasons of the child to
drop out from school.
2. 3 or 30% of our male students spends time in child labor. During harvest season, they are hired
to be a part of the harvesting team together with their parents. This reason is also tolerated by
their parents since their child are helping them to send their other children to go to school and
to provide for their daily expenses.
3. 5 (3 males and 2 females) or 29.41% of the students are working as helpers of other people.
When they do their task, most of the time they are absent from their classes and eventually
decided to drop out.
4. 5 or 29.41% female students during the school year got pregnant. They stopped in the middle of
the school year and eventually dropped out because it is time for them to give birth.
