For your final for Book Bistro, you will be selecting five items that represent your
learning over the course of this year. You will place these items into a “brown bag,”
and bring them to the final (this is much like what we did at the start of the year where
you brought in three items that represented who you are). You will bring in five items
total, one addressing/representing each guiding question. These items have to
represent the the best/worst text (literally or figuratively), or the other questions.
Step One: Answering (ALL) Guiding Questions:
❏ What is the best book you read this year? Why?
❏ What is the worst book you read this year? Why?
❏ What is adolescence?
❏ What is literature?
❏ What is adolescents’ literature?
Format: Book + Symbolic Item = Answer to the questions above.
Step Two:
For the write up you will need to write a paragraph clearly explaining the specific
connections between your item(s) and the questions outlined above. Please note that
the item(s) in your bag may be more metaphorical, than literal. You just need to be
able to explain how each item connects to a book you read this year, either by way of
character, theme, etc.
In your paper, include at least two passages from course texts (assigned and/or
outside reading) that help to explain your brown bag item(s). Please be sure to
include author, title, and page number(s) for each passage. You will need textual
evidence.
A hard copy of this paper is due Monday, May 21st.
Step Three:
You will come to class and sit with your Book Bistro table mates. Each student will
share his/her connections for each item. You will present your item and thoughts to
your peers, explaining how the item represents either the best/worst book you read
this semester, and the other questions. You will record additional connections on your
paper.
Step Four:
You will be assessing each other’s work during the Brown Bag exam. Each member of
your Book Bistro table mates will give you a presentation score. They will also be
graded on how well they listened to your presentation.
