Rodrigo Duterte has been nicknamed as “The Punisher” and the “Dirty Harry”. He is

enormously popular with people due to his successful zero-tolerance policies against

criminals. Over 20 years, acting as mayor in Davao, he turned the city from the murder

capital of the Philippines to what tourism organizations now describe as “The most

peaceful city in Southeast Asia”. Ever since he filed for his candidacy for President,

people have been talking about him and have gained popularity over other presidential

candidates. However, I will not be voting for Duterte for he promotes extrajudicial

killings and how he blatantly objectifies women.

Duterte enforces rules in a cruel manner. His ways of enforcing laws are unconstitutional

and unethical. He is known to express his support extrajudicial killing and summary

executions saying “summary execution of criminals remain the most effective way to

crush kidnapping and illegal drugs”. Duterte has publicly admitted to being linked to the

Davao death squad. He then pledged that if he became president of the Philippines he

would execute 100,000 more criminals and dump their bodies in Manila Bay. Once, he

forced a tourist to swallow a cigarette butt for refusing to follow the cigarette ban

ordinance. His boastful brand of violence should not be a platform for his political office.

Duterte and other like will him would most likely pose a grave danger and threat to the

safety of the citizens.

Duterte continuously shows in media platforms how he employs derogatory statements

and actions that malign women. There are court records that show that his ex-wife,

Elizabeth Zimmerman Duterte was on the receiving end of an abusive relationship and

can describe Rodrigo as a womanizer. He doesn’t shy away from this and admits that he

has three women in his life aside from his wife. He is also known to invite women

supporters to sit on his lap while he fondled and kiss them. During an event, he was asked

to respond to a question from Vice Presidential candidate Leni Robredo and his answer

was “I hate to respond on questions, issues coming from lady candidates.” His comment

implies how he does not value the opinions or questions of women. And just recently

there was a video of Duterte joking about Jacqueline Hamill who was raped by a gang

during a hostage taking. He said “Nagalit ako kasi nirape, oo isa rin 'yun . Pero

napakaganda, dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna. Sayang.” This only shows how he

doesn’t respect women and only views them as sexual beings for his satisfaction.

Duterte may be a popular candidate for presidency but his ways of enforcing discipline

and the way he treats women may show that he is unfit to be our next president. A leader

can have all the competencies in the world but when one is not equipped with the right

values, our very country may crumble. If we are to build the Philippines, let us not build

it based on fear. We need a nation founded on respect and dignity.
