You are required to obtain towing tank resistance test results for the FTV Bluefin, and assess
the operational efficiency of the vessel using the current Caterpillar 3512B engine and
controllable pitch propeller. Taking propeller pitch into account, provide projections on the
fuel consumption of the vessel over a range of engine operating conditions and make
recommendations with regard to a maximum operational speed of the vessel.
Assessment Criteria:
1. Identify and discuss the resistance components of a ship hull,
2. Utilise measured model-scale physical model to deduce full-scale quantities
through a combination of testing and analysis based on semi-empirical methods,
3. Apply the ITTC procedures to transform the resistance characteristics of a ship
between model and full scale
4. Determine the bluefin resistance coefficients for both model and full-scale ship by
utilising given empirical methods and based on measured experimental data,
5. Identify different marine propulsion devices and explain their operation,
6. Discuss the effects of interaction between hull and propulsor and how this affects
the propeller design,
7. Apply the ITTC procedures to determine propeller requirements,
8. Apply your understanding of ship resistance and propulsion to estimate the
required delivered and breaking power.
9. If the selected CPP propeller and shaft must rotate at a speed of 245 ± 40 rpm:
- Compare between the performance of various types of high-speed diesel engines
(at least three engines) to be purchased and installed aboard the bluefin. Your
decision must include parameters that would influence the vessel’s
performance, and running cost. The selected engine must comply with weight,
volume, and Tier III IMO restrictions.
- Compare and select between suitable gearboxes, and mechanical/ hydraulic
clutches, if needed.
10. Solve problems in relation to the vessel speed and fuel consumption of Bluefin
through analysis, and calculations with reference to relevant theory.
