to create hundreds of laundry bags in support of Australia’s
servicemen and women.
The laundry bags depict Australian themes and will be
presented to athletes involved in the 2018 Invictus Games
- an international multi-sport competition for serving and
former serving military personnel who’ve been wounded,
injured or become ill during military service.
The laundry bag project was instigated by the Central
Council of Women’s Auxiliaries New South Wales State
President, Pauline James, and involves the creation of 550
handmade laundry bags for participating athletes.
Bacchus Marsh RSL Women’s Auxiliary President, Bev
Kummerlowe said the community group was more than
happy to be involved in the project.
“When it was decided that the Invictus Games would be
held in Australia this year, the head office asked if auxiliaries
in Victoria and New South Wales would help make the bags
for the athletes and of course we said yes,” she said.
“We have about six volunteers making the bags from home
and they can be as creative as they want, as long as the bags
are a certain measurement and have some sort of Aussie
theme, like vegemite or a wombat.
“One lady in particular, Beryl Leek, has put in a lot of hours
and she is just craft crazy. She’ll bring one of her new designs
in and all the ladies will ask her where she got the pattern,
and they’ll go home and make another design. It’s a real team
effort; all the volunteers are phenomenal”.
The Bacchus Marsh RSL Women’s Auxiliary have made in
excess of 100 bags so far.
“Our ladies have been committed to creating the bags
for these diggers who have been to war and got hurt,” Ms
Kummerlowe said.
“It’s a little token of gratitude for those diggers and it’s what
being part of the RSL is all about”.
The laundry bags will be presented at the 2018 Invictus
Games in Sydney, which will run from October 20 to 27.

Ejected after

If ever a council meeting needed to be live-
streamed it was on Wednesday 2 May at the
Ballan council chambers.
The meeting ended as quickly as it started
when at 6.02pm the Ordinary Meeting
of Council was adjourned due to a man
removing his clothes in the gallery.

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, and didn’t

Pegasus – the name means horse and is also
the name of a rewards promotion gift to a
local not for profit community organisation.
The Australian Gliding Museum at the
Bacchus Marsh aerodrome were given
a funding boost from Stoney’s Club in
Maddingley, one of 11 Pegasus Leisure
group venues, that is supported by the
MRC Foundation; a philanthropic arm of
Melbourne Racing Club.
An oversized cheque for $1000 was gladly
received by David Goldsmith from the
museum.
“We have three gliding clubs here, Geelong,
Melbourne and Beaufort and after losing
our major sponsor last year, this donation is
gratefully received.
“Currently we are surviving on
memberships and donations. We have 63
gliders in the collection and some we have
returned to flying condition, with vintage
gliders being restored,” he said.
“The money we have received from the
MRC Foundation will help us progress and
assist us with repairs, restorations and the
preservation of the museum. We have a
workshop, paint shop and the museum with
potential for a fabric workshop.”
To restore gliders to original condition,
plywood and a polyester/synthetic cloth is
used.
Kate O’Sullivan from the Pegasus Leisure
Group congratulated the gliding club and
was pleased to support their organisation.
“You give to the community and the

renovation with close to three quarters of a
million dollars spent to provide a community
meeting place.”

Sections of the Brisbane Ranges National
Park will be temporarily closed during a
three-year conservative program aimed at
protecting and rehabilitating native flora
and fauna.
The program will be delivered by Parks
Victoria, with some sections of the park
closed to the public for periods of time on
two-to-three days each month.
The conservation program will focus
on reducing numbers of deer and feral
goats in the park, which are damaging the
environment.
Parks Victoria District Manager, Tony
English said the program will be carried
out during afternoons and evenings, under
strictly controlled conditions.
“The Brisbane Ranges National Park is
home to many important plant and animal
species, and is the state’s richest wildflower
habitat,” he said.
“This conservation program will help
protect native flora and fauna by reducing
populations of deer and feral goats to
manageable levels.
“Unaffected sections of the national park
will remain open to the public.”
The Brisbane Ranges National Park supports
more than 600 plant species, representing a
quarter of the number of recorded flora in
Victoria.
This includes the locally common Brisbane
Ranges grevillea, which is found nowhere
else in the world.
Mr English said Parks Victoria is using
highly skilled professionals to deliver the
program, which will be thoroughly planned
and carried out under strict conditions
designed to ensure safe, effective and
humane practices at all times.

of running or walking, in a race against a train.
Bacchus Marsh marathon runner, Brett Ellis,
has placed third in one of the nation’s most
popular events – Puffing Billy’s Great Train
Race.
Brett, 23, who is in training for his first
overseas marathon in Christchurch next
month, crossed the line in 44 minutes and
nine seconds, less than two minutes behind
the winner.
“It was a real battle for third place,’’ Ellis said.
He said he felt he was “on track’’ for a good
showing in New Zealand where he hoped
to finish the marathon inside 2 hours and 25
minutes.
For his effort Ellis won a $500 voucher from
Brooks, the shoe manufacturer, a free pass to

As winter approaches, camping is still

on the agenda for many a dedicated bush
walker and families.
The Lerderderg State Park is now home
to a new campground located on Upper
Chadwick Track, five kilometres from
O’Brien’s Crossing. The Lerderderg
Campground is accessible with two-wheel
drive vehicles, and is available without
bookings, on a first-in, first-served basis.
In true bush style, the new Lerderderg
Campground sits deep within gumtree
forests at the northern end of the state park
and offers camping sites with fire-pits, picnic
tables and toilets.
Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas
said the Andrews Labor Government has
invested around $80,000 to develop the
campground and Parks Victoria plans to
continue expanding the site over the coming
years.
“This campground will encourage more
people to explore the spectacular scenery
Lerderderg State Park has to offer, and to
learn more about Victoria’s parks, plants and
animals,” Ms Thomas said.
The park is also important for wildlife, with
koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas
visible during the day, while at night-time,
keen-eyed visitors can see greater gliders,
mountain brushtail possums, bent-wing bats
and powerful owls.

Taking a new path

An intense seven-month program is set to
provide nine young people with assistance in
future careers and community participation.
The Western Bulldogs Leadership Project
has partnered with Moorabool Shire Council
and local businesses being involved with
sponsorship.
Youth Development Officer Linda
Mackenzie said the program offers practical
and theory-based activities.
“The program is designed to support
young people to enhance their capacities
in community engagement, leadership,
teamwork, communication, goal setting,
support networks, and resilience.”
The Moorabool program was launched in
late March with the first direct involvement
for the group being a two-night camp, after
attending the Western Bulldogs v Essendon
match at Etihad Stadium. The Dogs 14.20

Sponsors of the project will have the
opportunity to attend a ‘meet and greet’
in coming weeks with a graduation at the
completion of the program in September.

No fresh air in federal budget

As year follows year and
budget follows budget the
newspapers follow the sto-
ries and the Treasurer gets
much airplay.
This year’s federal budget
is no different and the
reactions are also pretty
normal. ‘What will it mean
for us’ is the immediate
general headline. In other
words, ‘What will it mean
for our pockets?’
There is no headline, that
I noticed, that said, ‘What
will it mean for all life?’
‘What will it mean for
the future of the planet?’
What will it mean for fu-
ture humans, fish, barrier
reefs, plants, animals in
Australia?’
Needless to say nothing.
Nothing.
If you think this year’s Fed-
eral Budget was good, read
no further. What I have to
say will be of no interest to
you. I will now, with some
expert help from a number
of university studies of the
Budget, spell out why this
budget is so horribly igno-
rant and short termed.
Here are just some specific
examples of the betrayal of
all things environmental in
this year’s budget.
1. The Treasurer Scott
Morrison neglected to even
mention ‘climate change’ in
his budget speech.
2. Funding for Australia’s
Environment Department
was cut again in this year’s
budget. Since the 2012-13
budget, funding for the En-
vironment Department has
been cut by 37%. At a time
when ecosystems are under
extreme stress and entire
species are threatened, the
government is choosing to
cut environment funding.
3. In the 2013-14 budget,
climate spending was $5.75
billion. Last year it was $3
billion. In this budget, this
is down to $1.6 billion, with
projections of further cuts
to $1.25 billion in 2021-22.
This means that the Clean
Energy Finance Corpora-
tion, the Australian Re-
newable Energy Agency
(ARENA) and the Emis-
sions Reductions Fund will
all be operating with less
funding. This is a signifi-
cant cut compared to the
original allocation of fund-
ing for ARENA, which was
$1.4 billion in the 2012-13
budget. This will severely
restrict the ability of the
CEFC and ARENA to sup-
port new renewable energy
projects. The rest of the
world is moving ahead
with a renewable energy
boom and Australia is be-
ing left behind, choosing
to prop up aging and pol-
luting coal fired power sta-
tions instead.
This flies in the face of pub-
lic sentiment. Polling con-
ducted recently found that

summer on record.
Meanwhile Australia’s
emissions keep increas-
ing, with a 1.1% increase
over the year to September
2017.The government could
choose to cut our climate
pollution by investing in
renewable energy, and
could help communities
deal with climate change
by investing in climate.
4. The Federal Govern-
ment announced that the
Renewable Energy Target
will be phased out from
2020. Meanwhile, the fossil
fuel industry will continue
to receive billions of dollars
in government handouts
each year.
5. The Federal Govern-
ment confirmed that they
will not adopt the Op-
position’s 50% renewable
energy target. Instead, mil-
lions will be funnelled
into the National Energy
Guarantee (NEG), which in
its current form is woefully
inadequate when it comes
to tackling climate change.
6. There was no mention in
this budget of Adani or the
Galilee Basin, but prospects
for taxpayer funding is still
live, with Adani talking
to the Export Finance and
Insurance Corporation and
the Minister giving it the
green light to fund these
sorts of projects.
7. One thing that was no-
ticed in the fine print of
the Environment Depart-
ment’s budget paper is that
the Government is now
finally admitting that it is
failing to meet its legisla-
tive requirement to protect
endangered species. The
Government is required
by law to develop spe-
cies recovery plans when
the Threatened Species
Committee says they are
needed and in this budget
the Government acknowl-
edges that it is failing to do
this. And despite admitting
that it is failing to properly
administer the law, it isn’t
putting forward money or
solutions to make sure it
does.

Victorians will now be required to register
their household swimming pools and spas.
The mandatory register will include regular
inspections to ensure pool and spa safety
barriers are effective and working properly.
There are an estimated 158,000 pools
in Victoria, all of which are required to
meet high safety standards at the time
of construction. However, many are now
considered to be unsafe due to general wear
and tear, landscaping and house alterations,
overgrown trees or ground movements.
Under the regulatory changes, pool and
spa owners will be required to ensure their
safety barriers remain in working order at all
times – just as at the day they were installed.
Under new state government legislation,
households will need to register their pool or
spa with their local council and declare their
pool barriers are compliant.
Moorabool Shire Council Chief Executive,
Rob Croxford said residents will be required
to undertake an inspection of their pools and
spas every three years.

Melton South resident, Elijah Meldrum was
just two-years-old when he drowned in his
family pool in September 2015. The Coroner’s
report said the death, which was the result of
a faulty pool gate, was preventable.
Elijah was one of 13 drowning deaths of
children aged 0-4 years of age in home
swimming pools and outdoor spas in
Victoria from July 1 2006 to June 30 2016.
The Andrews Labor Government will
introduce the new legislation to parliament
in June, with the new mandatory pool and
spa register and inspection regime to be in
place by the 2019 summer season.
Unity in historic signing

Natural resources in Moorabool stand to
benefit from a landmark agreement by two
state organisations.
The agreement would promote and bind
sustainable agriculture as well as strengthen
the shire’s management of natural resources
such as rivers, state forests and bushland.
“The partnership of Landcare Victoria Inc
and Vic Catchments has taken a major step
further with the agreement,” Vic Catchments
chair, Dr Peter Veenker said.
Dr Veenker and Landcare Victoria’s
chair, Mr Terry Hubbard have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding.
The MOU signing was welcomed by
Moorabool Landcare Network president, Mr
Anthony Dufty.
“I totally endorse this MOU. I support this
because it would provide greater ability to
achieve on-ground works,” he said.
“Hopefully this could lead to greater co-
funding opportunities.”
Dr Veenker said the MOU would
consolidate the 20-year partnership of the
two organisations.
“This agreement will ensure this
relationship will only get better over the next
20 (years),” he said.
He said government grants to Landcare
would “go further.”
Mr Hubbard said the MOU’s aims included
building on the capacity of the two
organisations and providing consistency of
principles and would also allow flexibility for
Moorabool to implement actions, respecting
its unique attributes, such as its waterways,
and for its residents to set up ways to harness
skills, knowledge and resources to meet the
organisations’ common goals.
Vic Catchments is an unincorporated
industry organisation representing the state’s
ten catchment management authorities and
Landcare Victoria Inc has been the state’s
peak body for sustained land management
for 30 years.

Police Rounds
Ballan Police
At approximately 1200 hrs on Friday 27 April, an off-road
rider fell from his motorcycle in the Lerderderg State Park. As
a result of the fall, the rider sustained a penetrating wound
from a tree branch to the right upper thigh. Air Ambulance
were requested and were able to winch the casualty out of the
area. Police in attendance provided assistance with stretcher
carrying the casualty to a suitable landing zone. The rider is
in a stable condition with serious injuries.

On Monday 23 April, a family violence incident resulted in
one of the parties being allegedly stabbed in Korweinguboora.
The injuries sustained in the incident were considered
serious but not life threatening. One male was conveyed
by ambulance to hospital. The matter is now the subject of a
police investigation.

The Blackwood Pub, the last remaining
hotel, celebrates its 150th anniversary this

Fire bug strikes

A series of arson attacks has seen the
Ballan township fall victim to five
deliberately lit fires in just two weeks.
The grass fires occurred along Gillespies
Lane, Ingliston Drive, Shaws Road and
Bences Lane.
One of the fires has been attributed
to the theft of copper wire from a live
electricity pole.
Ballan Police Station’s Officer in Charge,
Sgt. Michael Kearnes said the fires
caused superficial damage to grass and
fences.
“The potential for catastrophic fires,
however, is a very real threat,” he said.
“In all cases, the day was either a high
fire danger index rated day or a Total
Fire Ban day”.
Sergeant Kearnes said the fires seemed
to have been lit between 10am and 4pm.
“These fires are the subject of an
ongoing investigation, however I can
say that Ballan Police and their partners
at Moorabool CIU are satisfied that the
fires were deliberately lit based on a
number of factors.
“A person of interest has been spoken
to, however enquiries are ongoing. We
are not fixated on any individual at this
time”.
Sergeant Kearnes urged the Ballan
community to be vigilant and report any
suspicious vehicles or persons seen on
Total Fire Ban days, or a high fire danger

Wind back the tape

Andrew has been making
podcasts since 2015.
While visiting his mum
in Bacchus Marsh, Media
Creator Andrew Sidwell, 48,
talked about his latest idea
for a podcast.
“The idea came about
because I found some old
cassettes from when I was 18.
[My brother] Chris, now 51,
and I had hidden a cassette
recorder and we were trying
to catch [best mate at the
time] Leith out in my old
bedroom. It was only about
30 seconds but [it] took me
back 30 years and conveyed
part of a bigger story in just a
glimpse of the past.”
Mr Sidwell is on the hunt
for long-lost treasure. He
has a theory that in Bacchus
Marsh homes forgotten
boxes of old cassettes may
be gathering dust. There is
“some gold out there,” says
Andrew.
From the early 60s to the
end of the 80s cassette tapes
were all the rage for playing
and recording music and
messages.
“Amongst these recordings
I think there’s a story to be
told in a podcast. I’m not sure
what that story is because I
don’t know what I’ll find,”
says Mr Sidwell. Listening to
the cassettes he hopes to find
will “uncork the story”.
Mr Sidwell is concerned
that these old cassette tapes
could be headed for the tip.
“I’m not sure if there are
[still] cassettes out there,” he
says.
He asked his mum to spread
the word to her friends and
their families, suggesting
they take a look in the shed,
the garage, at the back of the
wardrobe or where ever the
old junk is kept.
Mr Sidwell will pay for the
cost of having the cassettes
sent to him. “If they want I
can send [the cassettes] back
after I listen and record the
interesting bits,” he says.

prices are continuing to rise,
further cuts to Land Transfer
Duty would have encour-
aged investors and provided
increased opportunity for
homebuyers without hurt-
ing the Budget bottom line.
“In this election year, the
REIV will continue to urge
both sides of politics to com-
mit to a reduction in the tax
burden on property,” Mr
Simpson said.
The REIV supports the cuts
to payroll tax in regional
Victoria, while noting that
many businesses are too
small to take advantage.
“Payroll taxes, like property
taxes, curb investment and
are anti-employment. We
welcome any cuts but would
have preferred a further
increase in the payroll tax
threshold so that all busi-
nesses can benefit.
“REIV also welcomes the
continued commitment to
improving road and rail
infrastructure. Access to ef-
ficient public transport, bet-
ter roads and faster rail, as
well as proximity to essen-
tial services, make locations
more desirable and increase
demand,” Mr Simpson said.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics
Cross County last Saturday was held around the grounds
of the YMCA Lady Northcote Camp in Rowsley.  Conditions
were cool and the misty showers made the track a little
slippery around the start and finish line area.
In the Under 7 & 8 1000 metre event, Deegan Doyle recorded
his third consecutive win while Aisha Lidgett-Egan was
the first girl across the line this week.  In the Under 9 &
10 1500 metre event Nicholas Ide, Oliver Carr and Riley
Rodgers were the top 3 placegetters.   In the largest field
for the meet, our Under 11 & 12 athletes contested the 2000
metres race.  Xavier Goodman and Mitchell Wells continue
to provide great competition for each other, while Elise
Cook was a dominant performer for the girls.  For the Open
Age event, Jack Mutsaerts led from start to finish and as yet
this season has not been challenged over the 3000 metre
distance.  The Centre welcomed newly registered member
Bridget Henthorn who has produced some very impressive

players’ every week, his season’s
form to date cannot be denied.
He has immediate impact in
which ever role he is given and is
crucial to the club’s premiership
aspirations.

arguably Lake Wendouree’s
most dangerous player Nathan
Pring were restricted to little or
no influence. Evidently those
performances contributed to the
club’s two wins this season.
5. BLOODING THE YOUTH
- The Devils have not shied
away from rewarding in-form
youngsters. Five debutants in
the opening four rounds have al-
ready donned the Black & White
jumper. Azzopardi 17 (3 games),
Ward 17 (2 games), Dodemaide
17 (1 game), J.Cadman 17 (1
game) and Pattison 18 (1 game)
have all earned their chance, and
all have upside to be there at the
business end.
THE CONS
1. INJURY/AVAILABILTY -
Some may argue that injury/
availability should be listed un-
der ‘Pro’ given the team’s likely
improvement on their return. I
disagree. The simple fact is nine
of Darley’s best 22 have been
sidelined already this year and
we’re only at round four. Get
this; Kennedy, Ellis, Ancum,
Roy, Edwards, Inglis, Hanson,
Young, and Closter have already
missed in the first month - right
now it’s an issue.

COBRAS SURVIVE PANTHERS SCARE
Bacchus Marsh hit the ‘power on’ button to reel
in a 20-point deficit and over-run a determined
Melton South at the weekend. Defenders Trent
Angwin and Liam Mullen kept the Cobras within
reach at the main change. Mullen’s form continued
throughout the second half while mobile small
Billy Griffiths made soap look like a dry footy.
His clean hands stood out from the rest. Melton
South dominated the midfield in the opening half
before the move of Sherlock and Riley Stuhldrier
into the centre square paid off with immediate
results. The Cobras controlled the game for most of
the second half, Willitts again the star up forward
sealing the 30-point win with his five goals. The
Marsh are now 2-1 having had the bye after Round
4 and sit comfortably in third place on the ladder.
The Cobras are away in their next home and away
fixture after the Interleague round to East Point on
Saturday May 26.
OWEN TO MISS INTERLEAGUE
Bacchus Marsh boom recruit JAKE OWEN will
miss Saturday’s Interleague match against the
Goulburn Valley league at the MCG. Owen was
on the wrong end of a horror collision suffering
a broken nose in the opening minutes of the first
term during last Saturday’s win over Melton South.
The key forward lay motionless for a few minutes
before paramedics arrived. Owen was taken away
by ambulance for observation after the sickening
knock. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said he was
unsure how long his star recruit would spend on
the sidelines.
“He’s a tough nut, Jake - who knows?”
LOCAL STARS ON SHOW AT THE MCG
BFNL reigning premiers Darley will have up to five
representatives in this Saturday’s showdown with
the GVFL at the MCG. All will be likely starters
in this once in a lifetime opportunity to perform
on the big stage at the home of football. Devils
coach Heath Scotland will play a part, joining the
coaching ranks to look after the backline. Town
rivals Bacchus Marsh will too be represented. Four
players were named in the squad and was later
reduced to three given the injury to Jake Owen at
the weekend. BFNL officials are holding their cards
close to their chest, reluctant to name the details
of their squad. Looks like they mean business. I’m
tipping they will be more than happy to divulge
to the supporting media on the back of a win on
Saturday. Watch this space.

Clunes Historic Truck Show

The old showgrounds in Clunes was the venue for a spectac-

ular family event on the Labour Day long weekend in March
this year, the 8th Annual Clunes Historic Truck Show.
Each year the members of the Ballarat branch of the His-
toric Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia put on the one
day event, and as it is the long weekend it allows participat-
ing enthusiasts from Victoria and beyond the time to travel,
set up camp overnight, show their vehicles and then on the
Monday, leisurely pack up and depart homewards.
David Wraight from Shannons Ballarat had worked tireless-
ly for four years to bring the huge Shannons Big Rig field day
bus to this event. The two level unit comprises of an upstairs
viewing area and on the lower level, entertainment and in-
formation desk, gaming consoles, large plasma screens and
the ultimate V8 Supercars driving simulators.
On the main arena, about 200 heritage trucks stood, all
shapes and sizes, some gleaming with new paintwork, oth-
ers as the condition they have been dragged from the own-
er’s shed. The restored trucks often displayed a Provenance
board to show their original condition and the story of their
restoration.
The southern area was the site for vintage and classic cars
and around 1pm, the crowd was treated to the amazing ar-
rival of more than 70 motorcycles which had travelled that
morning from the Maryborough district. The variety of these
bikes was awesome and ranged from 1910 Indians to more
modern bikes of recent times. Tractor enthusiasts were able
to enjoy the collection of machines in their own section of the
oval, these including Lanz Bulldog, a number of Chamber-
lains set up for overland touring and a racy red single cylin-
der Porsche tractor, one of only a couple in Australia.
