Section 3: Reading Comprehension (20 points)

Directions: Read the following passages and answer the questions

Passage 1: 10 points

Human Cells Organelles and Their Functions

Line 1 The organelles of cells and their functions are important for the well-being of the cell and for
the health of the person. The human body is composed of more than 100 trillion cells, of which there
are many varieties. Cells are composed of small, specialised structures or organelles, each with their
own unique role. The functions of the cells organelles in humans are associated with diseases when
certain organelles of cells and their functions are not working properly.

Line 6 The nucleus is a large membrane bound organelle. Most cells have a single nucleus though
skeletal muscle can have more than one (multinucleate) or some cells such as red blood cells have no
nucleus (enucleate). The nucleus contains the genetic material and is where DNA replication and RNA
transcription occur. The nucleus is bound by a membrane which contains nuclear pores. These pores
allow RNA molecules and proteins to move in and out of the nucleus. However, this process is selective
and is energy dependent. The nucleolus is a specialised region within the nucleus where RNA and
protein components of ribosomes are assembled.
3
Line 13 Ribosomes can either float freely within the cell or are bound to the endoplasmic reticulum.
They are the sites where protein molecules are synthesised from amino acids and RNA. Ribosomes read
the messenger RNA (sequence copied from the DNA sequence) and this is used to generate the protein.
Ribosomes are made from complexes of proteins and RNAs two subunits. Endoplasmic reticulum is a
network of membranes, involved in protein synthesis, the modification of several molecules and the
regulation of calcium concentration. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is where ribosomes attach to the
surface and is the location where proteins are synthesised. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is the
area where lipids and steroids are synthesised and where calcium is regulated.

31. The word “well-being” in line 1 is closest in 36. In paragraph 1, the purposes of cell
meaning to organelles in humans are
A. life A. unrelated to illness when cells break
B. organism B. an indication of cancerous cells
C. health C. a unique characteristic of their use
D. cell D. to assist the cell in caring for a person

32. What does “enucleate” in line 8 mean? 37. In paragraph 2, what occurs in the nucleus
and what does it include?
A. cells that have multiple nuclei A. DNA copying and genetic matter
B. cells that have one nucleus B. Membrane reaction and RNA pores
C. cells that have no nucleus C. DNA originality and varied material
D. skeletal muscle that has many cells D. Energy duplication and protein

33. The word “their” in line 5 refers to 36. What can be inferred from paragraph 3
about the endoplasmic reticulum?
A. humans A. It’s a system that produces substances.
B. diseases B. Some elements cannot be controlled.
C. organelles C. It contains ribosomes.
D. structures D. There is no bond with the ribosomes.

34. The word “they” in line 14 refers to 39. It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that lipids
and steroids are
A. endoplasmic reticulum A. just a single part of the ribosomes
B. amino acids B. close to where calcium is regulated
C. cells C. combined with ribosomes
D. ribosomes D. produced on the cell’s exterior

35. It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that the 40. Which of the following is NOT true about the
organelles of cells are nucleolus?

A. significant for human reproduction A. It’s a unique area in the nucleus.

B. sometimes linked to sickness B. The RNA and protein is collected there.
C. trivial for human strength C. It’s a regular section in the nucleus.
D. a larger section of a smaller cell D. Elements of ribosomes amass there.

Passage 2: 10 points
The Fall of the Roman Empire
Line 1 To many historians the fall of the Roman Empire has always been viewed as the end of the
ancient world and the onset of the Middle Ages, often improperly called the Dark Ages, despite
Petrarch’s assertion. Since much of the west had already fallen by the middle of the fifth century, when
a writer speaks of the fall of the empire, he or she generally refers to the fall of the city of Rome.

Line 5 Although historians generally agree on the year of the fall, 476 CE, they often disagree on its
causes. English historian Edward Gibbon, who wrote in the late 18th century CE, points to the rise of
Christianity and its effect on the Roman psyche while others believe the decline and fall was due, in part,
to the influx of 'barbarians' from the north and west.
Line 9 Whatever the cause, whether it was religion, external attack, or the internal decay of the city
itself, the debate continues to the present day; however, one significant point must be established
before a discussion of the roots of the fall can continue: the decline and fall was only in the west. The
eastern half - that which would eventually be called the Byzantine Empire - would continue for several
centuries, and, in many ways, it retained a unique Roman identity.
Line 14 One of most widely accepted causes - the influx of a barbaric horde - is discounted by some who
feel that the mighty Rome, the eternal city, could not have so easily fallen victim to a culture that
possessed little or nothing in the way of a political, social or economic foundation. They believe the fall
of Rome simply came because the barbarians took advantage of difficulties already existing in Rome -
problems that included a decaying city (both physically and morally), little to no tax revenue,
overpopulation, poor leadership, and, most importantly, inadequate defence. To some the fall was
inevitable.
Line 21 Unlike the fall of earlier empires such as the Assyrian and Persian, Rome did not succumb to
either war or revolution. On the last day of the empire, a barbarian member of the Germanic tribe Siri
and former commander in the Roman army entered the city unopposed. The one-time military and
financial power of the Mediterranean was unable to resist.

41. The word “decline” in line 11 is closest in 44. The word “they” in line 16 refers to

C. collapse C. the Assyrian Empire

A. the Barbaric horde cause of the fall of the Roman Empire?
