ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)

This is a group of behavioral symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
This can occur in people with learning difficulties, sleep disorders and anxiety. Noticed at early age and
become more noticeable when circumstances change.( Example). The start of school between ages 6
and 12. ADHD is common in the United Kingdom. It affects 2 to5% school aged and youth. More
diagnosed in boys than girls. This can continue through adolescence and adulthood.

Other symptoms:

 Short attention span or easily distracted


 Restlessness constant fidgeting or over activity
 Impulsive

Causes

The exact cause is unknown but the condition has been shown to run in families, and researches have
identified number of possible differences in the brains of people with ADHD.

Other factors include the ff:

 Premature birth
 Low birth weight
 Nicotine, alcohol abuse during pregnancy
 Trauma/injury to the brain

Management and Treatment

There is no specific cure but it can be managed with appropriate educational support, family support
and affected children alongside with prescribed medications.

 Psychological therapies (CBT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Looking after a child with ADHD can
be CHALLENGING but it is important to remember that they cannot help their behavior.

Other Issues to consider:

 Sleep hours at night


 Getting ready for school on time
 Listening to and carrying out instructions
 Being organized
 Social occasions
 Shopping
Adults with ADHD may also find they have similar problems and some may have issues on
drugs, crime and employment.
