Implementation Observation Form

Apprentice Teacher: Travis Hickox

Observer: Shannon Hartley

Date of the Observation: 3/13/18

Subject/Grade Level/Class Period: Science/8/5th

3.1 The teacher used questioning strategies to develop skills and facilitate interaction with
students.

Evidence:

Students are asked a question comparing their models to the school models. They are given
time in groups to discuss the differences and similarities. They then share out as a class.

3.2 The teacher’s questioning strategies developed student conceptual understanding of

important mathematics or science content (e.g. emphasizing higher order questions,
appropriately using “wait time,” exploring incorrect answers).

Evidence:

Opener: Asked students to verbally describe explain what causes the orbit and then diagram
that on the board.

Activity 1:Plenty of wait time was given for students to think independently and then group
time to talk before coming together as a whole class.

3.3 The teacher involved all students in the lesson (calling on non-volunteers, facilitating
student-student interaction, checking in with hesitant learners, etc.).

Evidence:

Teacher walked around the room and visited all groups as they were working on their projects.
He asked students for clarification on their parts and when a misconception was identified he
reviewed this with the whole class.

3.4 The teacher used formative assessment effectively to be aware of the progress of all
students.

Evidence:

Listening to student conversations and asking questions throughout allowed the teacher to
identify the progress and review any misconceptions.

3.5 The teacher modified the lesson appropriately when formative assessment demonstrated
that students did not understand.

Evidence:

In the opener, when the teacher realized that the students were confused about the velocity of
the planets around the sun he went ahead and took the time to have them review.

3.6 An appropriate amount of time was devoted to each part of the lesson.

Evidence:

Timing was planned out ahead of time and teacher kept track of his pacing and set time frames
for students.

3.7 The instructional strategies and activities used in this lesson clearly connected to students’
prior knowledge and experience.

Evidence:

Students had been learning about the earth, sun, moon relationship. This lesson took it larger
to include the solar system and the relationship between different celestial objects.

3.8 The teacher's instructional strategies included safe, environmentally appropriate, and
ethical implementation of laboratory procedures and/or classroom activities.

Evidence:

All activities were safe and appropriate for the classroom.
