Rationale Statement

i. Performances: (1) The teacher regularly assesses individual and group performance in order to
design and modify instruction to meet learners’ needs in each area of development (cognitive,
linguistic, social, emotional, and physical) and scaffolds the next level of development.

Artifact: Observation Report #4 - Domains of the Child

Date of Completion: April 2018

Course Completed in: EDUC-230-02 Education Field Experience

Rationale Statement:
In this observation report, I have demonstrated how although the student, Johnny, being
observed was not particularly receptive to instruction due to his lack of confidence, the teacher
accurately formatively assessed and reinforced the material before moving onto the next chapter
of the novel. He did this by quizzing the students on the chapter they were to have read, and then
by reviewing the chapter with discussion questions after the quizzes had been collected. Through
this technique, the teacher can see what the students did and did not understand and then go
forward and tweak his lesson plan accordingly to accommodate the student’s needs. This directly
relates to standard three because it shows how the teacher “regularly assesses individual and
group performance in order to design and modify instruction to meet learners’ needs in each area
of development” (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, p.2)

Through completing this observation, I have learned how to utilize formative assessments
in a realistic way. The quiz only took several minutes and gave insight to which students were
staying on task with their outside reading and which students were slacking and not completing
homework assignments. This took the standard into real life for me, which was much easier to
understand when applied to an everyday situation.

I could use this observation report going forward in my career to see how important it is
to assess students in a way that is reasonable. This formative assessment was a very doable thing
I could see myself utilizing in class, and it also served as a positive reinforcer to encourage
students to keep up with their reading. This observation report will serve me well with the
reminder of the importance of encouraging my students to stay on task, as it will keep their
confidence up and their grades at a high.
