I. Armed Schools

II. Lesson Essential Question(s): Should we arm school staff? How can we protect

students?

III. Standards: Standard 9, 21st Century Life and Careers. Career-ready individuals

understand the interrelated nature of their actions and regularly make decisions that

positively impact and/or mitigate negative impact on other people, organization, and

the environment. They are aware of and utilize new technologies, understandings,

procedures, materials, and regulations affecting the nature of their work as it relates to

the impact on the social condition, the environment and the profitability of the

organization.

IV. A. Learning Objectives and Assessments: Students will understand the positive and

negative affects of arming school staff members. Teacher will be able to assess

students’ understanding by group discussion at the end of the lesson.

1. Slide show presentation


VI. Pre-Lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge: Students will bring prior

knowledge of the subject as well as personal opinions/experiences.

VII. Lesson Beginning: Starts off with what the topic is and what issue is it solving. Then

an explanation of the history of this solution and where it is implemented.

VIII. Instructional Plan:

1. Introduction to the topic and issue.

2. Then a brief history on the idea of arming staff and what schools it is already

affecting.

3. Following that the pros and cons will be listed and explained.

4. Then a group discussion to end the lesson and to assess the acquired knowledge.

IX. Closure: This lesson will be brought to an end with students discussing how this

solution can solve the problem at hand or how it could be ineffective.
