EXPLAAIN HOW AN AEROPLANE IS CONTROLLED WWITHIN THE 3 AXIS AND

NAME THE AXIS

Normal axis

 It passes from the aircraft to bottom through the center of gravity

 Movement about this axis is known as YAW displacement
 Brought about by pushing the left or right rudder pedal. But, ailerons also have a
secondary effect on YAW (Adverse Yaw)
 Pushing the right rudder pedal kicks the rudder to the right. This results in
aerodynamic forces (Bernoulli’s Principle) that moves the aircraft fin to the left

causing the aircraft to Yaw to the right about the center of gravity

Lateral axis

 It passes for the aircraft wing-tip to wing-tip through the center of gravity
 Movement about this axis is known as PITCH displacement
 Achieved by pulling back or pushing forward the control column
 Pushing the control column forward causes the elevator leading edge to be raised
and the trailing edge to be lowered
 This develops aerodynamic forces (Bernoulli’s Principle) that lifts the empennage,

thus causing the aircraft to PITCH DOWN about the center of gravity

Longitudinal axis

 It passes from the aircraft nose to tail trough the center of gravity
 Movement about this axis is known as ROLL displacement

Cat A – Aeroplane Essays

 Achieved by moving the control column to left or right

 Moving the control column to the left causes the left aileron trailing edge to move
up and simultaneously lowering the right aileron trailing edge
 This increases the lift on the right wing and decreases lift on the left wing
 This differential lift causes the aircraft to ROLL to the left about the center of

gravity
