Overview:
The course is designed for higher surgical trainees in Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial Surgery, and practising surgical
oncologists to attain practical skills in Microvascular Surgery. The course has been structures to gain maximum hands-on experience
in the Microvascular laboratory under the supervision of experienced faculty. Delegates will also have opportunity to participate in
live surgery sessions.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of course, the trainees are expected to acquire skills for microvascular surgery
Number of Participants: Restricted to 15 in each batch.
Course Details:
Days 1-4:
Laboratory training in microvascular procedures. This part of course will be conducted in surgical skills laboratory. Each of the
participants will have separate table equipped with operating microscope, micro instruments and sutures. During these four days the
participants will be able to do hands on anastomosis of different kinds in animal vessels and nerves under guidance of experienced
microvascular surgeons. Various anastomosis techniques like end-to-end, end to side anastomosis, use of vein grafts and nerve repair
will be demonstrated initially and the participants will be able to practice it themselves during the course.
Day 5:
Participation in operative procedures (one to two cases of microvascular flap reconstructions). The delegates will have
chance to attend operation theatre suite. Two major free flap reconstructions will be demonstrated and the practical aspects of free
flaps transfers including the postoperative managements will be discussed through didactic lectures on this day.
Hands-on Flap Harvesting Course: 3 – 4 July, 2010

Course description:-
2 days of intensive hands-on cadaver flap harvesting course is designed to provide the delegate opportunity to get familiarised with the
anatomy and technique of raising common free and pedicled flaps used in head and neck reconstruction.
Demonstration of harvesting of common free flaps like radial forearm, lateral arm, anterolateral thigh, fibula, DCIA, rectus abdominis
and gracilis; regional flaps like latissimus dorsi, PMMC, delto-pectoral, submental, temporalis and various forehead flaps will be
demonstrated.
Participants will have opportunity to raise the flaps under guidance of expert faculty.
The number will be restricted to allow optimum exposure to the participant.
This course is scheduled between two sessions of microvascular surgery course to enable participants in both courses in the same
stretch of time. Registration can be sought for the flap harvest course alone or together with the microvascular training course. Course
fee includes complimentary transportation to course venue (Trichur) and Saturday night dinner.
