Learning through Literature

Jawahir Yousif Alhammadi

Course Teacher: Antoinette Wiseman
Course Code: ECE 3203
The stories are a great way to introduce new words or ideas into a child’s language and develop
their knowledge. We know that when we read more story for our children that will improve their
knowledge and let the children understand the important aspects of their life through reading the
story (Bonfiglio, C. 2017). I wrote a story which the name of the story “No more lying” and it’s
appropriate for children to form 3 – 5 years old because it teaches them they should be honest.
And it’s my first time that I read a story that I made it for smaller age, they are engaging and
enjoying while I reading a story, and the thing that attracts their attention that I made concrete
things which they can touch it.

No more lying story its written by author Jawahir Alhammadi and the Illustrator Fatima Al
Baluki. This book suitable for the children age group from four and up, and the grade level
preschool. The genre of this story is realistic fiction which could happen in real life. I focused to
shows the realistic aspect of the story which teaches the kids that they should not lie and even if
they make a big mistake, and they must be honest to let everyone to trust you. However, I tried
as much as I can while I was writing this story to make the theme and the I idea or the point of
the story to be associated to each other, which include the culture and the religious of the
emirates families.

As a detail of this story, the story talking about Rashid with his family. One day in the morning
the Rashid family sitting in the living room eating the dates and drinking coffee. Then Rashid
went to the garden to play with his plane. After that Rashid entered the living room while his
mother preparing the lunch, he wants to eat but his mother asked him did you washed your
hands, then he said yes. And when his mother asks him so why you don’t show me your hands,
he is nervous because he didn’t wash his hands and he lying. However, while Rashied was
playing with his ball in the living room, he broke the flower pot by mistake and when his dad
asks him did you break the pot, he said no and he lying again. When Rashid’s and his parents go
to their garden they are surprised when they saw all the flowers damaged, and they asked Rashid
did you do that he said no, but his parents didn’t trust him because he lies a lot. Suddenly the
neighbor’s daughter came and apology that her cat damaged their flowers garden, not Rashid,
then Rashid’s Parents apologized to their son Rashid and they told him that he must always be
honest so that everyone will trust him.

I wrote this story to deliver a message, which explains for the children that they should always be
honest and doesn’t lie even if they make a big mistake, because if we are learning from our
mistake and if we didn’t make any mistake how we will learn. According to the Jean Piaget, Erik
Erikson, and Lawrence Kohlberg that agree and concentrate on child development. All of those
theories they agree that literacy is helping the children to develop different aspects of child
development, such as intellectual and cognitive development, social development, and moral
development. Especially when the parents and teachers choosing a storybook that attracts the
child and appeal of his or her interest at each stage of their development, and the story helps
children to understand their emotions and roles. Also, its help to develop the understanding and

1
acceptance of themselves and others and it can teach the child to avoid punishment (Snyder, N.
2017).

I choose the theme of the story to be more emirates cutler such as the boy and his family they
wear traditional clothes of the U.A.E and the point of the story which is they must be honest and
doesn’t lie to attract the children attention and let them engage with me because some of the
situations that happen on the story which is possible happen for some of the children. Moreover,
I choose this topic of this story which is “no more lying”, because I don’t like lying and even if
they made a big mistake I can’t like to cover my mistake to be a nice person and I cannot lie
because it is contrary to my religion and also its shows on my face if I lie.

 I started my lesson by asking students question about the storybook rule. How can I hold
the book in a right way, how can I open the book? How can I start reading the story from
down to up or right to left? While I read the story for the students, I asked them about what
it happened during the story. What happened for the Rashid when he broke the flower pot
while he playing with his ball? And at the end of the story, I asked the students who can
remain me the seven days of the week, let’s count from one to ten. During the activities
time, I asked the students about the concept so I can see how they understand the story and
the outcome of the story. I assess the students by asking them the question to see how they
know and develop their thinking, cognitive and fine motor skills while they activities.
