Vampires Made with love.
Today, a couple of well-meaning vampires help us distinguish some
basic verbs that Turkish learners confuse all the time.

Getirmek vs götürmek. Beginner

Dialog

1 | Vampir Müge Çok açım. Şu kızı bana getirsene. Güzel kokuyor.

2 | Vampir Ceren O kız benim arkadaşım. Onu yeme. Senin kan torban yok mu?

3 | Vampir Müge Arkadaşım hepsini götürmüş. Bana kalmadı. O yüzden çok açım.

4 | Vampir Ceren Biz iyi vampirleriz. İnsanlardan kan içmiyoruz. Dişlerimizi göstermiyoruz.

5 | Vampir Müge Biliyorum. Haklısın. Bir dakika.

6 | Vampir Ceren Kimi arıyorsun?

7 | Vampir Müge Yemek Sepetini. Bana üç tane koyun gönderin diyeceğim.

Dialog Translation

1 | Vampir Müge I'm so hungry. Bring me that girl. She smells nice.

2 | Vampir Ceren That girl is my friend. Don't eat her. Do you not have your blood bag?
 3 | Vampir Müge My friend took all of them. I don't have any left. So, I'm really hungry.

4 | Vampir Ceren We are good vampires. We don't drink blood from people. We don't show our teeth.

5 | Vampir Müge I know. You're right. One minute.

6 | Vampir Ceren Who are you calling?

7 | Vampir Müge Yemek Sepeti. I will tell them to send three sheep to me.

8 | Vampir Ceren Also tell them to send me two oxen.

Language Points

Getirmek

Getirmek means to bring. You can remember this by noticing that it begins with "get" - it refers to you getting
something.

Eve ekmek getirdi.

He brought bread home.

Çocuğumu bana getir.

Bring my child to me.

Sana çikolata getirdiler.

They brought chocolate to you.

Götürmek

Götürmek means to take. Whereas getirmek refers to something coming to you, götürmek refers to something
being taken somewhere else. You can remember this by noticing it begins with "go" - as in something going away
from you.
 Çocuğu okula götürdüm.
I took the child to school.

Arabayı garaja götürdüler.

They took the car to the garage.

Köpeği köye götürdük.

We took the dog to the village.

Göndermek

Göndermek means to send.

Bana mektup gönderecek.

He is going to send me a letter.

Çocuğu annesine gönderin.

Send the child to his mother.

Köye köpeğimizi gönderiyoruz.

We are sending our dog to the village.

Göstermek

Göstermek means to show.

Bana yüzünü göster.

Show me your face.

Ali'ye defterimi gösterdim.

I showed Ali my notebook.

Notlarını bize göstermedi.

He didn't show his grades to us.
