Glass is a traditional material with a rich array of uses. It is closely related to our
cultural development: the industrial production of glass opens up new areas of appli-
cation, making possible constructions with previously unimaginable spatial effects.
Glass influences architecture in a unique way, allowing architects to play with light,
with the relationship between “inside” and “outside”, and our relationship to spaces
and to nature. With it we can influence light and heat, the atmosphere of spaces
and the views out of them.
However glass rarely stands alone, needing other materials to hold, carry and
support it. Consequently it requires an integrated design approach between many
disciplines: good glass architecture is invariably the result of successful interplay
of design, technology, construction and implementation.
Glass appears – depending on its composition – transparent or translucent, coloured
or clear. Despite when convincingly claimed to be, glass is never “invisible”.
This publication brings together the highlights on glass in architecture from DETAIL
magazine. Alongside theoretical investigations of the subject, it offers a wealth of
inspiration and constructive solutions through an extensive series of case studies.
