A one-way slab is designed for the spanning direction alone; the main
tension reinforcing bars of such slabs run parallel to the span. For the
transverse direction, a minimum amount of shrinkage reinforcement is
provided.
One-way slab action is assumed in a ribbed floor (slab with joist beams)
made of precast double tee sections, in ribbed floor with integral
beams, and also in hollow-block or -cored slabs.

#1 ONE WAY SLAB:
Ask New Question
One way slab is a slab which is supported by beams on the two opposite sides to
carry the load along one direction. The ratio of longer span (l) to shorter span (b)
is equal or greater than 2, considered as One way slab because this slab will bend
in one direction i.e in the direction along its shorter span
Due to the huge difference in lengths, load is not transferred to the shorter
beams. Main reinforcement is provided in shorter span and distribution
reinforcement in longer span.
Example: Generally all the Cantilever slabs are one Way slab. Chajjas and
verandahs are an practical example of one way slab.
Two way slab is a slab supported by beams on all the four sides and the loads are
carried by the supports along both directions, it is known as two way slab. In two
way slab, the ratio of longer span (l) to shorter span (b) is less than 2.
In two way slabs, load will be carried in both the directions. So, main
reinforcement is provided in both direction for two way slabs.

One-way slabs carrying predominantly uniform load are designed on the
assumption that they consist of a series of rectangular beams 1 m wide spanning
between supporting beams or walls (Ref. Figure 1.1).
Figure 1.1 and Figure 1.2 explains the share of loads on beams in two
perpendicular directions depends upon the aspect ratio ly /lx of the slab, lx
being the shorter span. For large values of ly, the triangular area is much less
than the trapezoidal area (Ref. Figure1.2). Hence, the share of loads on beams
along shorter span will gradually reduce with increasing ratio of ly /lx. In such
cases, it may be said that the loads are primarily taken by beams along longer
span. The deflection profiles of the slab along both directions are also shown in
the Figure 1.2. The deflection profile is found to be constant along the longer
span except near the edges for the slab panel. These slabs are designated as one-
way slabs as they span in one direction (shorter one) only for a large part of the
slab when ly /lx > 2.
Two-way slabs which are subjected mostly to uniformly distributed loads resist
them primarily by bending about both the axis shown below in Figure 2.1.

All of the the answers has sufficiently said about the basic theoretical
differences. But here are some practical aspects:
1. Generally in today's construction work, One way slab is not is not used
normally.
2. Mostly all the one way slab which is constructed now a days are of a very small
dimensions.
3. If there is a slab supported in all four directions, that doesn't mean that it is a
Two Way Slab. One has to know the ratio of the longer to shorter side and
should know about the Reinforcement distribution, before considering it as a
one way or two way slab.
4. Generally all the Cantilever slabs are one Way slab. Chajjas are an practical

Two way slabs are the slabs that are supported on four sides and the ratio of
longer span (l) to shorter span (b) is less than 2. In two way slabs, load will be
carried in both the directions. So, main reinforcement is provided in both
direction for two way slabs.
What is the difference between normal slab and
two way slabs post-tensioned slab?
In case of slab which rests on four edges, 2 conditions may arise. Two
way ND one way distribution when length /width is less than 2 it has
two way behavior ND above 2 it has one way behavior
In two way behavior slab has bending in both axis and distribution of loads r
Shared by all support whearas in one way slab bending is in one direction only
ND only two support takes load.
Two way behavior maybe changed to one way behavior if one Axis is allowed to
yield by withdrawal of Reinforcement in that Axis. Bt it is always suggested to
have two way behavior since while distribution of loads in two way slab gives
economy as load is channelled in two Axis by same slab
