Introduction
The Digital Vision Network is a suite of digital recording
hardware and software products designed to enhance
the capabilities of the P2000 security management
system.
The DVN 5000 Rackmount Series comprises three
different models: DVN 5000 Real-Time, DVN 5000X
Real-Time (for network cameras), and DVN 5000
Multiplexed. These models offer various levels of video
and audio recording and transmission for both large
and small installations. Figure 1: DVN 5000 Rackmount

MPEG4-based Calculators (without Motion Index Enabled)

This section enables you to determine:
• The recommended maximum number of network cameras that can be supported on a dedicated Ethernet
network.
• The minimum storage space needed on a DVN under varying video settings.
Note: Network IP cameras are only supported on DVN 5000 servers running software Version 2.7 or higher.

Digital Vision Network (DVN) 5000 Rackmount Series Product Bulletin 9

Determining the maximum number of network cameras or the minimum storage space required depends on the
following primary factors:
• Resolution Setting (4CIF, 2CIF, CIF, or QCIF)
• Image Quality Setting (DVN Cameras) or Compression Setting (AXIS Network Cameras)
• Amount of Motion in Video
• Frames Per Second (FPS) Setting
Note: The bandwidth calculations in this section include a 20% buffer for other network traffic.
Note: Unless specified otherwise, the calculators in this section are based on the National Television Standards
Committee (NTSC) video standard.
Network Camera Calculator
Use the following tables to calculate the recommended maximum number of network cameras that can be
supported on a dedicated Ethernet network.
The network camera calculator is based on the AXIS Design Tool, an online calculator for measuring bandwidth
requirements. The AXIS Design Tool is located at:
http://www.axis.com/products/video/design_tool/calculator.htm
Note: The bandwidth calculations in this section are based on 25% background traffic and no event recording.

Storage Calculator
Use the following tables to calculate the minimum storage space needed under varying video settings.
The bandwidth charts are based on the following calculation:
(Average Frame Size * FPS * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 24 hours * Number of Days * Number of Cameras) /
(1024 * 1024) = Required Disk Size (GB)
Example:
Average Frame Size = 7.12; FPS = 6; Number of Days = 30; Number of Cameras = 16
7.12 * 6 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 * 16 = 1,771,683,840
1,771,683,840 / 1,048,576 = 1690 GB
The following storage calculator is based on 4CIF resolution. For calculations of 2CIF, CIF and QCIF, refer to the
online DVN Storage Calculator, available on the Johnson Controls Security Portal at:

DVN 5000 Series and P2000 Software Integration Compatibility Chart
Johnson Controls provides integration between the P2000/P2000LE Security Management System (SMS) and
Digital Vision Network (DVN) 5000 Series systems via the P2000 Digital Video Recording (DVR) Integration (AV)
Option.
If integrating a DVN 5000 with a P2000 SMS, refer to Table 26 to identify which software versions are compatible
between the two products.
Table 26: DVN 5000 Series and P2000 Software Integration Compatibility Chart

P2000 Software Version1 2.0 2.3 2.5 2.7 2.9
3.8 --- --- --- Yes Yes2
3.4 --- --- Yes Yes ---
3.1 Yes Yes Yes --- ---
1. May require the installation of the latest P2000 service packs.
2. Requires installation of the DVN Software Development Kit (SDK) on each P2000 server and workstation.

Note: DVN 5000 Series servers and clients running software version 2.9 are not backwards compatible with DVN
products running software version 2.7 or earlier. In addition, upgrading any single DVN 5000 server or client to
software version 2.9 requires all DVN products in the system to be upgraded to software version 2.9.
Compatible Software
The DVN 5000 series is compatible with the following software applications (see Table 27). For more information,
please refer to the individual software product bulletins listed on the Online Product Literature webpage (under
Security Systems>Digital Video Recording>DVN Software Suites).

1. Software user licenses are required per DVN server.

Note: SiteManager is an optional software package which requires purchase of a license for activation and
connectivity to multiple DVNs. On some prior versions, it was possible to bypass the proper activation process, and
it will no longer be possible to enable without the proper authorization.
