Lesson 27 – Close calls

Read Mike’s story. Then read Mike’s answers and write questions.

This story is about my “bad day.” I was hiking on a trail in the woods last summer with my dog, Skipper. I
was walking on the trail when I saw a lake. It was a really hot, sunny day, so I wanted to go in the water. I was
swimming in the cool lake when I saw a family of bears. My shirt and shorts were on the beach, and the baby
bear was playing with them. My lunch was in my backpack, and the bigger bears were eating it. Skipper was
barking really loudly, so he scared the baby bear. The baby bear ran into the woods. He was holding my shirt and
shorts in his mouth! I had no shirt or shorts, so I didn’t want to get out of the water. I wasn’t feeling very happy.
After a few hours, I was really cold and hungry. Suddenly, I heard voices. Some girls were hiking on the
same trail. They were my classmates! When I told them the story, they were really laughing. One girl gave
me a big blanket. (They were sitting on it when they had their picnic.) Of course, everyone was laughing
when Skipper and I walked out of the woods – I was wearing a blanket!
