Homework #6
Moment-Curvature Response

Following bulleted items are identical to those used in homework #5.

• Consider the 18 in. square cross section shown on the right. It has eight No. 9
longitudinal bars. Assume the concrete clear cover over the ties is 1.5 in.
• Divide your cross section into 10 horizontal concrete layers (top and bottom
layers are unconfined, other layers are confined).
• Assume unconfined concrete has f’c = 4.5 ksi, and crushes at an axial strain, ε
of 0.0048.
• Longitudinal steel has fy = 60 ksi, ultimate strength = 100 ksi; εsh =0.015; 1%
slope for yield plateau; εsu = 0.09; and rupture strain εrupture = 0.14.
• Transverse steel has fyh = 60 ksi. Assume No. 4 bars are used as column ties and spaced at 4 in.
(to observe the effect of confinement better).

1) Provide plots of stress-strain relationship for

a) longitudinal steel
b) unconfined concrete
c) confined concrete if #3 column ties are uniformly spaced at 18 in.
d) confined concrete if #4 column ties are uniformly spaced at 10 in.
e) confined concrete if #4 column ties are uniformly spaced at 4 in.
Plot all concrete stress strain relations (b-e) on the same graph (same as homework #4). No new
work is required in this part (already done in hw #4 and used in hw #5).

2) Calculate (by hand) approximate moments and curvatures (M-φ pairs) at following critical
points if #4 column ties are uniformly spaced at 10 in. Draw M-φ diagram by connecting the four
points below by hand.
i) first flexural cracking,
ii) longitudinal steel yielding,
iii) spalling of shell concrete, and
iv) ultimate curvature
3) Write and submit a computer program to compute the moment-curvature relation for the section.
a) if no column ties are provided
b) if #3 column ties are uniformly spaced at 18 in.
c) if #4 column ties are uniformly spaced at 10 in.
d) if #4 column ties are uniformly spaced at 4 in.

i) Submit a separate plot for each case above.

ii) Plot all moment-curvature relations (3a through 3d) on the same graph, and comment on the
effectiveness of column ties.
iii) Compute the nominal moment capacity, Mn using simplified the ACI design procedure (already
done in homework #4). Draw a horizontal line corresponding to this nominal strength Mn.

Compare and comment on the calculated and design moment strengths.

4) Repeat Problem 3 above, assuming a constant compressive axial load, P of 200 kips is applied
on the cross section.

i) Submit a separate plot for each case (as in 3i).

ii) Plot all moment-curvature relations (4a through 4d) on the same graph (as in 3ii).
iii) Show and compare the plots from Problems 3b, 3d, 4b and 4d on the same graph.

Comment on the effect of axial load (zero versus 200 kips) on the flexural strength and
deformation of the column sections.
