Question 1: Fill in this table
Scatterplot Equation of Equation of computer-
handwritten trendline generated trendline
January 2017 y=⅘ x+32 y=0.3194x+43.342
March 2017 y=4x-20 y=0.8355x+38.761
July 2017 y=⅗x+84 y=-0.1746x+92.761
December 2017 y=-5/20x+42.5 y=-0.6476x+56.619

Question 2: Compare and contrast each handwritten equation versus the computer-
generated equation. State if they are close to each other or very different. (Things to
examine: slopes and y-intercepts)

To begin in the equations from the month of january are very different from each other.
This is because in the handwritten equation the slope in decimal form is 0.8 which is very
different from 0.3194. Although the y intercepts are kind of alike because they both use
whole numbers. The numbers of March are very different because 4 is a whole number
while 0.8 is a decimal making them very different ,although the y intercept are similar. The
numbers of July are very different since the handwritten equation has a slope in form of a
fraction while the computer generated equation has a negative decimal form slope. The y Commented [5]: Watch capitalization rules, but overall
very good
intercept are also different because they are very far away from each other. The numbers of
December are also very different because the slope for handwritten equation has a slope in
form of a fraction while the computer generated equation has negative decimal form slope.

Question 3: Did anything about the computer generated trendline surprise you? Why or why
not?

Yes the computer generated trendline did surprise me. To begin the difference between the
computer generated trendline and handwritten expression were very different. The computer
generated trendline was more precise rather than the handwritten expression. The computer
generated trend lines were very accurate and plotted all points. For example the equations
from january were very different. The slope was 0.8 which is greater than 0.3194 and that is a
huge difference. It surprised me how different the outcome to both y-intercept and slope could
be.
Day 4
By the end of today this document should have:
1. . Each of the following questions fully and completely

Question 4: Complete this table

Scatterplot Correlation By Eye (positive/negative, R2 score
strong weak)
January 2017 positive weak 0.07178 Commented [6]: Nice job classifying these properly
March 2017 positive strong 0.42518 Commented [7]: Nice job classifying these properly
July 2017 negative weak 0.08582 Commented [8]: Nice job classifying these properly
December 2017 negative strong 0.28109 Commented [9]: Nice job classifying these properly

Question 5: Did your opinion of the correlation match the r2 score? If not, why do you think
they are different? If so, explain how you came up with the accurate answer?

Yes, my opinion on correlation did match the r2 score. I came up with an accurate answer
because in January the temperature increased slightly. Meanwhile in March the temperature
increased greatly. In July the temperature decreased slightly. Lastly the temperature in
December decreased dramatically. This gave me a correlation of + weak, + strong, - weak, -
strong.
Day 5
By the end of today this document should have:
1. Each of the following questions fully and completely

Question 6: Are you surprised by the correlation shown by each graph? Keep in mind to
consider when each month occurs during the year and what is usually going with the
temperatures at that time.

January 2017:

I am surprised with the correlation of January. This is because in January the temperatures is
cold. Also the temperature usually goes down and almost never reaches high temperatures. Commented [10]: Great use of logical temp data in your
answers
This is because January is supposedly the coldest month but this graph shows otherwise. In the
graph both trend lines seem to be increasing meaning the temperature is getting warmer. In
the month of January the temperature is suppose to get colder. Therefore this correlation
surprised me greatly.

March 2017:
I am not surprised with the correlation of March. This is because the temperature in March is
usually warm and cold. It is usually a crazy month with spread out temperatures. Also in March
the temperature starts to increase since it is getting closer to spring. In the graph the
handwritten trend line seems to be increasing. In the generated trend line also seems to be
increasing.0 Therefore it did not surprise me.

July 2017: I am surprised because usually during July the temperatures is very hot and
increases. But in the correlation it showed a decrease in the days. For example on the first day
of July the temperature was around 95 degrees but on day 30 it was below 85 degrees. So it
surprised me because July is one of the hottest months. In which the temperature is constantly
increasing since it is getting closer to August.

December 2017: the month of December did not surprise me. Near the month of December it
starts to get colder. And in the correlation on the graph showed decrease from the starting of
the month near the ending. This is normal because the month before December is usually
transitioning from warm to colder weather and December is a cold winter month. Therefore
this correlation did not surprise me.
Question 7: Do you believe that correlation is causation in this case? Why or why not?

I believe that correlation is not causation in this case. I believe this because the
temperature has many factors that cause it. For example the temperature can change base on
the wind and cloudiness. Therefore this can cause there to be different temperatures. For
example the temperature can be hot in December but be very cold a few days after. The day
which the temperature changes has nothing to do with the temperatures. What does affect
temperature is the place where the sun is, clouds, rain, wind, etc.

Question 8: In this case the x variable is the number of days from the beginning of each month.
For example, February 5th is 36 days (31 days in January and 5 days in February) from January
1st. So, if we wanted to make a prediction of what the high temperature would be on February
5th we would substitute in 36 for x. Using this example as a base, determine the temperature on
the following dates: **Show calculations**

February 14th:

0.3194+43.342= 0.3194(45)+43.342= 57.715

The temperature on February 14 will be 57 degrees.

April 19th :

0.8355x+38.761= 0.8355(50)+38.761=80.536

The temperature on April 19 will be 80 degrees.

September 9th:
Commented [11]: You must have a multiplication error
-0.1746x+92.761= -0.1746(71)+92.761=105.1576 in here (-1)
The temperature on September 9 will be 105 degrees.

November 30th:

-0.6476x+56.619= -0.6476(-1)+56.619= 57.2666

The temperature on November 30 will be 57 degrees.
