SITUATION
 Per WTO, the Philippines supplies 1.5% of
the total labor force in the global tourism
industry

 25,800 Tourism and Hospitality Management


Seniors are expected to graduate from 685
higher educational institutions in 2011

 20,500 new jobs in tourism in 2011

SITUATION
 Many schools particularly in remote regions
have difficulty placing their graduates
 insufficient relevant skills
 poor language proficiency
 shortage in apprenticeship venues
 Among the 685 colleges and universities
offering B.S. Tourism related programs, less
than 5% have achieved an Accreditation Level
III Status
 Heavy concentration of better schools in Metro
Manila - it produces 1/3 of total graduates

SITUATION
 National curriculum has 150 and 151 units –
compared with some countries:
 other countries have ladderized curriculum
 general education subjects are very limited
compared to our 54 units
 strong focus on apprenticeship
 opportunities are diverse to expose students
in humanities, languages, personality
development and problem-solving

SITUATION
 The Technical Education Skills Development
Authority (TESDA) has an extensive national
certification program; bartending, F&B
service, laundry, cooking, etc. but has
limited capability to service all regions
 Shortage of qualified assessors
 Average turnover rate of managers,
supervisors and R & F employees is
estimated between 12% to 23% per annum
(tenure) and 35% to 64% (casual)

RECOMMENDATIONS
TOURISM EDUCATION
 Revision of curricula to reflect
 longer apprenticeship hours – 1,200 hours
 mandatory foreign language
 mandatory inclusion of personality
development, domestic tourism, tourism
laws, HR management, tourism planning
and sustainable development
 Only practitioners or faculty with direct
experience should teach major subjects

HR & Training Service
 Tourism training services should be
monitored and accredited by DOT and TESDA
 Tourism establishments need to invest more
on career development of staff including
employee motivation and recognition
programs
 Tourism establishments need to partner more
with training institutions to expand and
improve apprenticeship programs
