Greetings from the President of MMU Global, maritime

specific university, Mokpo National Maritime University.
Thank you for visiting our University.
The sea is the source of life, a place to interchange human cultures and a treasure trove of
unlimited resources.
A long time ago, human beings were born in the sea. In ancient times, they created cultures
through the sea. In modern times, they began the Industrial Revolution through the sea,
and at present, control the world through the sea.

Our university produced the merchant marine officers who paved the way for our
country’s prosperity in the 1960s and 1970s. It cultivated the students who had key positions
in the marine physical distribution, transportation, shipbuilding and marine IT industries
of our country in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, it is creating a new breed of global marine
leaders who will be the driving force of a new maritime era.

Mokpo National Maritime University is inspired by the pioneering spirit of Dae-sa Jang
Bo-go, who controlled the seas during the Shilla period and the idea of the national
prosperity strategy suggested by one of England’s finest mariners, Sir Walter Raleigh, in
the 17th Century.

The sea, with it’s unlimited resources, is waiting for your frontier spirit and appetite for a
challenge.

1950.04.05 University was founded as Mokpo Fisheries and Marine High School
1979.03.01 Promoted to Mokpo Merchant Maritime College.

1993.03.01 Upgrade to Mokpo National Maritime University.

(3 Departments: Nautical Science, Marine Engineering Science, Communication
Science)
1995.03.01 Two new Department were added.
(Marine Electronic and Communication Engineering, Ocean System Engineering)
1996.03.01 University was reorganized into 4 Divisions. (Maritime Transportation Systems,
Marine
Engineering, Marine Electronic Engineering, Ocean System Engineering)
1997.03.01 Graduate School was established.
1999.03.01 Department of Maritime Police Science was established in the divisions of Marine
Engineering and Maritime Transportation System. Doctoral program was established
in Graduate School.

2001.07.26 Industrial Graduate School was established.

2002.11.09 Department of Computer Science & Engineering was added to the Division of
Maritime Electronics and Communication Engineering
2003.04.25 Training ship Sae Nuri was launched.
2004.08.03 Residence Hall was completed.
2005.06.16 Marine Simulation Center was established.
2006.01.05 MMU Honam Sae Grant College Program was established.
2007.01.07 MMU Language Education Center was established.
2007.01.07 MMU Lifelong Education Program was established.
2007.10.01 MMU New Main Building was officially opened.
2008.10.28 Opened the Ocean Poetry Part
2009.01.30 Opened the MMU History Museum
2009.05.14 Opened the Jeonnam branch of the Hankuk Shipbuilding Tools & Materials Institute
2011.03.01 Established two Colleges

Library Cadet Dormitory

The Library covers an area of 2,726m2 spread over 3
stories. It has over 162,000 books, including journals
and periodicals To provide as much knowledge and
information as possible For our students. The library
also has approximately 5,300 electronic journal and e-
books. Their content covers a wide Variety of topics,
including foreign languages, licenses, exams,
Computers, etc. Complete with it’s integrated user
Information system, the library is a comfortable and
peaceful Environment for students to study in.
This dormitory is subsidized by the government for
the students of the College of Maritime Science. All
students have to be trained to obtain the ability to
manage ships safety and effectively on the ocean.
It also teaches students to cooperate and lead through
living together. Dormitory life develops the cadet’s
personality and aptitude so this can happen.

Residence Hall

The residence hall has convenient and spacious

rooms providing a pleasant environment to study for
students of the College of Maritime Engineering.
Training Ships Each room equipped with a lounge and fitness
center.
The university owns two training ships for the training
of Naval Academy students. The training ships are
used for on-The-job training and safety education.
“Professors and teaching assistants, as well as captains
and Crews, are onboard Sae Nuri and Sae Yudal.
Also, for navigational training, the ships visit not only
major harbors in Korea, but also major harbors in the
United States, Singapore, the Philippines, China,
Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, India, and
Australia. ”

Marine Industry Research Institute Marine Simulation Center

The Marine Industry Research Institute has been
established to study and develop the basic and /or
applied scientific technology of the maritime industry,
coastal construction and marine environments. To
encourage university faculties to conduct various
research and finally to contribute to the progress of
industries and local communities.

The Marine Simulation Center consists of a Ship
Handling Simulator System(SHS), Global Maritime
Distress and Safety Simulator System(GMDSS) and
Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator System(LCHS)
which are supported by a state-of-the-art computer
system. This enables users not only to practice real
time based SHS, GMDSS, and LCHS training but
also familiarizes them with new computer graphics
circumstances.

The Research Institute of Mechanics & Electronics

was founded to make contributions to the promotion
of maritime industries and to the assistance of local
society through the research and development in the
maritime and ocean field.

Marine Engineering Workshop

This workshop supports student’s experiments and

faculty research, It consists of an engine simulation
lab, an electric experimentation lab, internal and
external combustion experimentation labs, and an
Applied Mechanics2 lab.
International Exchange & Education
Center

The IEEC is equipped with two language labs, three

development of students’ foreign language abilities,
At MMU we place a great emphasis on foreign
language teaching as we realize it is essential for
those who want to play an important role in the
global society of the future. The IEEC staff, which
includes several dedicated native speaking
instructors, develop and manage the various
language programs and facilities.

This school gives local residents a chance to study, to

improve their own life style and contribute to the
progress of the community.
In this school, everyone can study, regardless of their
academic background, gender, age, etc. MMU offers
