Painted by French Artist Antoinette Béfort in 1809, the scene portrays a young Theban woman
embracing her dying father. Yet, she remains calm in the face of tragedy. Béfort portrayed a
prominent female figure as a stoic heroine and a classical model for French women of her own
time.
