Assignment 3: What have I learned about these terms

● What does the term mean?
● Real-world connection: Why did you choose these terms to write about? What
is the relevance of these terms to you? How will you teach these terms in
developmentally appropriate ways to young children?
Biracial; Multiracial; Multiethnic; Mixed Heritage child:

This term means being more than one race. Meaning both biological parents can come

from a different race. The reason I choose this word was because I was not familiar with the

proper terminology but it is a lot more common. I have a couple students that fit this term and I

think it’s important to properly be aware that there is a term for it. The relevance is as I had

mentioned, I do have students that fit this term. I will teach these terms in developmentally

appropriate ways to help teach acceptance and to maintain anti-bias.

Cultural continuity/discontinuity:

This term means a person choosing another culture seeing as tho they do not relate to

their own. I had choose this term because I wasn’t aware of what it meant and I wanted to learn

more about it. This term reminded a lot of a similar discussion we had in class; when parents

don’t want to brace their hispanic side and embrace more being the dominant race and choosing

to be fully “American” in a sense. I notice this a lot when you the parents that can barely speak

English and instead of speaking Spanish to be better understood they stay to their version of

English. I came across one person who was talking to a family member of mine; almost laughing

at her as she spoke English, thinking my family member didn’t understand. To her surprised she

spoke it very well (seeing as that was her first language and she later picked up Spanish). I will

teach these in my classroom by emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance. We need to learn

to love and embrace our own culture along with everyone else's.

Transnational Family:

This term means a family whose child can move and live in another country. The reason I

chose this term was because I wasn’t familiar with it. I didn’t know what it meant and didn’t

realize I see it a lot more than I thought I did. A lot of my students just moved from Guadalajara,

Venezuela, and a lot of other places. Some moved altogether with family; others only the

children came to California and started staying with family, such as, grandparents that are

already here. A lot of my students fit this term. I will teach this term in my class by getting to

know where they came from and doing a similar activity that embraces family and connects us

all.
