1 Introduction
1.1 Prerequisites, target persons, notes

Prerequisites To follow the information given in the present document, the following in-depth
knowledge is required:
• Knowledge of the functionality and communication capabilities of the Synco 700
and EIB / KNX devices used by the system
• Knowledge of EIB / KNX bus technology and of using the ETS3 engineering /
commissioning tool
• Ideal starting point: Completion of EIB engineering and commissioning training
courses at one of the certified EIB training centers

Target persons The present ducument is targeted at persons working in the following fields:
• Engineering
of Konnex networks equipped with Synco and EIB / KNX devices
• Commissioning of communication
of Konnex networks equipped with Synco and EIB / KNX devices

Note on EIB The European Installation Bus (EIB) uses TP1 (Twisted Pair) as the transmission
medium. The datapoints communicate via so-called communication objects, also
termed group objects.
In the EIB world, the term "datapoint" (common term in building automation) is almost
unknown. For this document, the following convention applies: An S-mode datapoint
corresponds to a communication object or group object.

Note on Synco / Synco uses Konnex TP1 (EIB Twisted Pair) as the transmission medium. The Synco
Konnex devices communicate with each other in LTE mode.

The term "datapoint" has been introduced to the Konnex world (refer to KNX Standard,
Volume 3: System Specifications, Part: 7: Interworking, Chapter 2: Datapoint Types).
The title of the present document, "Konnex S-Mode Datapoints", has been derived from
the following terms:
• Transmission medium TP1 Î Konnex (Konnex bus / EIB Twisted Pair)
• Communication mode Î S-mode
• Communication objects Î Datapoints
The Konnex S-mode datapoints represent a subset of the Synco LTE mode datapoints.
They are used when, in Konnex networks, process values shall be communicated
between EIB devices and Synco devices.
For the communication of process values between Synco 700 devices only, the data-
points are connected via zone addresses (refer to document CE1P3127en).

Synco product data in The Synco product data (import files *.vd3) can be used with the ETS3 tool of version
ETS3 Professional V1.0 ETS3 Professional V1.0 or higher.
For technological reasons, Synco product data are not supported by earlier ETS ver-
sions. This means that Synco product data are not available with ETS2 V1.x.

1.1.1 Terms and abbreviations

Datapoint type The compatibility of the devices is predefined by datapoint type DPT. The format and
number of bits, coding of bits, value range and, where required, the unit (°C, %, m3/h,
etc.) are specified in each datapoint type.

S-mode S-mode stands for system mode. This mode is characterized by the assignment of
(logical) group addresses to S-mode datapoints for the transmission of process values.

S-mode datapoints For control and measuring tasks in HVAC plant and individual rooms, for lighting and
security plant, and for integration in higher level building automation and control sys-
tems, Synco 700 devices provide selected datapoints in S-mode.
S-mode datapoints and EIB communication objects can exchange process values,
provided datapoint type and group address agree.

Abbreviations Abbreviation Meaning

HVAC Products Introduction 28.04.2004
1.2.2 Network address

Network address According to a full-scale Konnex network, the network address consists of area, line
and device address. It reflects the unambiguous position of a device on the overall
network and is unique on a network.

Syntax of network A.L.D Area.Line.Device (division mark ".")

address Area 0 backbone
Area 1...15 main lines 1...15
Line 1...15 per area
Device 1...255 per line

Networkaddress, The default network address for Synco 700 devices is 0.2.255 (factory-set). The area /
factory-set line address 0.2 of the Synco devices is predefined by Konnex. It applies as long as no
area and no line couplers are used. The device address 255 must be changed (range
1...254), enabling the device on the bus to spontaneously send process values.

Individual address The "Individual address" (term used in the KNX world) comprises the positions of the
area, line and device addresses and corresponds to the above defined network
address.

Subnetwork, According to EIB and Konnex terminology, a subnetwork corresponds to a line. Hence,
subnetwork address the subnetwork address comprises the address parts "Area" and "Line".

1.2.3 Device address

The device address permits identification of a device (here device address 8) in a

certain area and certain line (factory setting = 0.2).

Konnex TP1

Device addressing For a Synco 700 device, it is only the device address that must be changed. Area and
line address 0.2 are preset or will automatically be adopted by the area and line coupler
(for addressing, refer to document CE1P3127en).

HVAC Products Introduction 28.04.2004
1.3 The group address for S-mode

The group address serves for S-mode communication. It is an address relating to the
function and has a 3-level structure in accordance with EIB guidelines. The assign-
ments can be freely selected but should not be changed within a project.
Syntax of the
group address H/M/S Main group/medium group/subgroup (division mark " / ")
Main group 0...15 e.g. plant
Medium group 0...7 e.g. function
Subgroup 0...255 e.g. element

Examples of group For example, the assignments "Plant/function/element" make possible the group
addresses addresses:
1/1/11 Heating/Signaling/Boiler
3/2/102 Room/Measuring/Temperature 2
5/4/151 Electro/Switching/Lighting 1

Group addresses The group addresses allow EIB communication objects to be connected to S-mode
datapoints. The addresses can only be assigned with the ETS3 tool.

HVAC Products Introduction 28.04.2004
1.3.1 Group addresses for System time, Fault information

Fixed group In the Konnex Standard, fixed group addresses are defined for a number of system
addresses functions (Functions of Common Interest, FOCI).

In the Synco system (see screenshot below), this applies to the following datapoints:
• System time group address 30/3/254
• Fault information group address 30/3/250

Notes All Synco devices that contain the above datapoints are supplied with the group ad-
dresses preset and connected to the respective group objects.
With the ETS3 Professional V1.0 tool, it is not (yet) possible to set group addresses
above 15 in main group H (refer to section 1.3). For the 2 datapoints "System time" and
"Fault information", a group address in the range 0…15 can be planned and loaded
until an ETS3 Professional version for setting group addresses 30/... becomes
available.
It should be noted that all Synco devices of a plant that receive or send the system time
and / or fault information must be planned and loaded with the ETS tool, even if only
one Synco device sends only one datapoint in S-mode, e.g. when a Synco 700 control-
ler transmits the outside temperature via the bus for indication on an EIB display.

HVAC Products Introduction 28.04.2004
1.4 Datapoint inputs and outputs

Normal case As a general rule, with Synco 700 devices for S-mode communication, a datapoint is
always connected to an input or output.

Example: Input S-mode datapoint "Room optg mode: Preselection"

Î Input Synco controller RMU / RMH receives the preselection for the
room operating mode, e.g. from an EIB / KNX device

Example: Output S-mode datapoint "Room optg mode: State"

Output Î Synco controller RMU / RMH sends the current room operating
mode (state), e.g. to EIB / KNX room controllers

Exceptions With the Synco controllers RMU7x0 and RMH760, there are certain S-mode datapoints
that can be connected as an input or output. The ETS3 tool shows this in the “Function”
column (refer to screenshot on the preceding page).

Example: S-mode datapoints whose “Function” column shows "Input / output" can be connected
Input / output to an input or output.

S-mode datapoint "Time of day"

Î Input Controller RMU / RMH is the clock time slave and receives the time of
day in S-mode from an EIB / KNX clock time master,
or
Output Î Controller RMU / RMH is the clock time master and sends the time of
day in S-mode to EIB / KNX clock time slaves.

Note The basic setting "Rem set clock slave = Yes" with the RMU / RMH controllers does not
apply to the S-mode datapoint inputs and outputs.

Example: S-mode datapoints of the same name whose “Function” column shows “Output” on one
Output and input line and “Input” on the next can only be connected to an input or output (see e.g.
datapoint "Outside temperature").

S-mode datapoint "Outside temperature"

Î Input Controller RMU / RMH receives the outside temperature in S-mode

from an EIB / KNX (third-party) sensor,
or
Output Î Controller RMU / RMH sends the outside temperature in S-mode
to EIB / KNX devices (refer to the notes given below).

Notes The outside sensor is connected to the terminals of the Synco controller. If the outside
temperature shall be transmitted to EIB / KNX devices, e.g. to a display, the S-mode
datapoint at the output must be connected.
Communication of the outside temperature between Synco 700 devices of the same
zone address takes place in LTE mode.

4 OZW771 Central Communication Unit
4.1 Overview

Brief description The OZW771 central communication unit opens up a number of communication paths
via the telephone network for remote operation and supervision of HVAC plant and
Synco 700 devices in Konnex networks.

For remote operation, PCs (so-called operator stations) with ACS operating software
are used. The devices that can be remotely operated, monitored and graphically
presented are those contained in the device list of the central communication unit.

Major functions provided by the central communication unit:

• Identification of the Synco devices on the Konnex bus by means of the automatic
search run
• Supervision of the Synco devices
• 2 fault inputs, e.g. for common fault status messges, thermal overload cutout, etc.
• Signaling faults via RS-232 or modem to the operator station
• Signaling faults via modem to SMS receiver, pager, fax machines* and
e-mail receivers* (* Only possible with GSM modem and depending on the telephone service provider)
