To celebrate the 20th anniversary of CMM, a social event took place last June. It
was a pleasant moment that brought together some of the founding members and
representatives of companies currently associated to CMM as members.

Regarding this issue of the “Metálica”, the candidate projects for the Portugal
Steel Design Awards 2017 are presented, from which three were selected to
represent Portugal in the ECCS European Steel Design Awards 2017. The high
quality of all the candidates is obvious, which clearly demonstrates the excellent
level of the Portuguese steel and composite construction sector.

The usual articles of opinion deal once again with very interesting topics, the Maat
museum, the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge in Brazil, how to estimate welding costs
and another perspective of the difficulties and opportunities of internationalization
of a Portuguese company.

Nuno Lopes
Diretor
Finally, the XI CMM Conference is highlighted. With a special theme “The new
generation of Eurocodes”, the program includes distinguished invited speakers,
parallel sessions to present different scientific and technical papers and a space
dedicated to technical exhibition. We expect it to be another successful event for
the steel and composite construction sector in Portugal.

This event was also attended by more than 30 large

companies from the wind sector, from many different
countries.

DNC Técnica accompanied some of its clients in these

There are openings in the existing roof slab around the

The project also provided a new façade to the main

the Alpha Structural Engineering Project, explains that
this metallic structure, which is more than 330 m in

supports allow horizontal displacements, avoiding the
introduction of stresses due to the dilatation work of

To execute these large swings and large spans with

Estimation of welding costs

The analysis of the above mentioned topics shows

that, even forgetting the design costs, the cost of
labour (LCs) represents a substantial part of the cost of
welding. Miller [2] estimates that in the case of manual

The Portuguese have always launched themselves through seas never navigated

Portuguese companies do, to grow in a sustainable way and affirm themselves
for the conquest of a place in the world and in the business thus contributing to
the recognition of their own country and to the improvement of their accounts
and reputation. Companies like Metalogalva work and give their impetus to the
modernization of the globe in its most solid and important structures that guarantee
the illumination, communications, safety and mobility. In fact, in addition to tourism,
it is the best and most advanced in Portugal and is marketed or implemented in other
strategic markets that gives us the much needed hope for a better future.

combining the beauty and functionality of the structure
with the use of three steel arches that support three
decks of 240 meters by means of sixteen steel stays, in
each arch [10], as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

2. The Juscelino Kubitschek bridge

Inaugurated on December 15, 2002, JK Bridge is one

and not even with the highest span. The arrangement
of the cross-track arches and alternating with each
other contradict the perception of those who expect
a monotonous symmetry, encountering an unusual
perspective [13], as shown in Figure 3. The design of
the bridge was elaborated by the architect Alexandre
Chan, being the winner of the National Competition for
Preliminary Studies in Architecture, in December 1998,
with a structure in three long-radius arches that cross
diagonally and are supported by four points of a water

consumption of money above the amount foreseen [14].

Due to the diagonal fit of the arches in the supporting
pillars, high-order three-dimensional stresses were
produced on the foundations, with a horizontal effort
level of 3500 tons-force, having been considered, up
to the present, the highest level of effort found in
foundations of bridge structures.

The construction of the work of art lasted for about

two years and the structural system of the bridge is
steel-concrete composite type, supported by steel
arches and stays on reinforced concrete pillars and
underwater foundations. It should be noted that the

arches, which are 240 meters long and needed to be
supported and molded provisionally based on the use of
steel “pillars” until its complete construction, as shown
in Figures 4 and 5. Thus, temporary support towers
were necessary to support the bridge deck spans,
because until the support stays from the steel arches
were ready [10], these towers divided the span of 240
meters into 4 spans of 48 and 52 meters, respectively
. It should be noted that 9 support towers (3 towers
for each steel arch) were built. The temporary support
towers were constructed in a triangular prism shape,
promoting the support of the steel deck during the
launch phase of the steel decks, and were removed
after this construction phase [5], as shown in Figures 4
and 5.

tons for the composite slabs and 2,570 tons for the
arches [2]. Completing the use of steel in the structural
design, 3,000 tons were used for the steel sheets of
the piles and about 1,309 tons of auxiliary structure to
support the constructive elements [18-19].

It is worth mentioning that the arches are the main

elements of the support structure of the bridge and its
assembly was composed of 69 modules each, limiting
the weight of the part to be hoisted up to 40 tons,
due to the availability of two electric gates of 20 tons
available for the execution of the structure. Each module
was again preassembled and welded at the construction

section. The steel arches were transversely stiffened
every 3.0 meters by diaphragms in the “T” -type profile
connected to the inner walls of the steel modules [20].

The steel arches were assembled simultaneously from

the ends to their center, and the first three modules at
each end were already complete. Meanwhile, the other
modules were assembled in a U-shaped section, with
the lower sets being assembled first and then the upper
sets (Figures 4 and 7). The assembly of the last module
(central closing module) was performed during the
night, with controlled temperature and due topographic
care depending on thermal expansion [20], as shown in

The assembly of the steel decks was only viable due to

the three support towers provisionally installed under
the bridge spans, with a load capacity of 1,000 tons.
The prefabricated structure at the construction sites
(the shore of Lake Paranoá) was launched by the beam
pushed method on the pillars and supports [14]. The
stays system consists of 16 cables (31 to 41 wire ropes)
that support the 240 m deck, transferring the load to
the arches by anchoring the central internal part of the
steel arches and the sides of the decks, allowing the
tension adjustment in the cables during its lifetime. The
wire ropes are composed of seven galvanized steel
wires immersed in wax and coated with high density
