Scope:

This experiment describes the following procedures for the determination of the consistency of freshly-
mixed concrete by means of the slump cone. To determine and measure the workability of freshly made
concrete with the use of plastic hydraulic cement.

Objective:

To determine and measure how hard and consistent a given sample of concrete is before curing.

Materials Needed:

Concrete mix design

 Cement
 Water
 Fine and coarse aggregates

Apparatus

 Large Pan
 Scoop or trowel to mix concrete mixture
 Steel tamping rod, preferably 5/8 inch in diameter, 24 inches long
 Slump cone/mold, galvanized metal
 Steel Ruler

Procedure:

a. Preparation of the Specimen

1. The samples shall meet the standards required.
i. Record the actual moisture condition of your aggregates.
ii. Coarse aggregates should be sieve first, and follow the prescribed gradation. Do that also for
the fine aggregates and get the fineness modulus.
iii. Because of time constraint, you may use the results of your former activities for the data on
the absorption, specific gravity, and dry-rodded density for as long as it will meet the
required range of standards.
iv. Make sure the cement that you are going to use had passed the required fineness.
2. Record all necessary data to be used for the following activity.
3. Make your own design mix. Assume your target compressive strength and slump for the
computation of your design.

b. For Slump Test

1. Place the mixing pan on the floor and moisten it with some water. Make sure it is damp and no
free standing water remains. Dampen the mold and place it on a flat, moist non-absorbent
(rigid) surface.
2. Firmly hold the slump cone in place using the 2 foot holds.
3. Fill the bottom 1/3 of the cone with the concrete mixture then tamp the layer 25 times using a
hemispherical tip 5/8-inch steel rod in a circular motion, making sure not to stir.
4. Add more concrete mixture to the two-thirds mark. Repeat rodding the layer 25 times again.
5. Fill up the whole cone up to the top with some excess concrete coming out of top then repeat
rodding 25 times. (If there is not enough concrete from tapping compression, stop tamping, add
more, then continue tamping at previous number).
6. Remove excess concrete from the top of slump cone by striking off the top using the rod in a
rolling motion until the concrete surface is flat with the top of the cone.
7. Slowly
