MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Session 2016/17-1

Study Guide for Final Examination

(Note: This Guide is for Electrical System Part Only)

Topic 1: DC, AC, Single Phase and Three-Phase Power.

1. Basic components of a basic electrical power grid system.
2. Understanding of the key parameters of a sinusoidal AC waveform. Calculates unknown quantities
when given a sinusoidal AC waveform equation, for example, frequency, time period, phase angle,
maximum voltage, and other related parameters.
3. Understanding of delta and star connection characteristics. Given the type of connection (either delta
or star) and the supply voltage parameters, calculates phase current, phase voltage, line current
and/or line voltage.
4. Given the type and number of unit of different appliances, and its’ respective rated power, usage
time and duty cycle, calculate the energy cost per month based on usage of electricity energy.

Topic 2: Induction Motor, Power Transformer.

1. Understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of induction motor compared to other AC
electric machine/motor. State the examples of the domestic/industrial applications of induction
motor.
2. Understanding of the slip parameters that characterize an induction motor. Given the supply to an
induction motor and the slip value, calculate its rotor speed and synchronous speed.
3. Understanding of the purpose, function and basic structure of power transformer.
4. Understanding of the mathematical equation relating to primary and secondary parts of a power
transformer. Given a selection of primary input current/voltage/turn and secondary output
current/voltage/turn, calculate the unknown quantities.

Topic 3: Wiring in Residential System.

1. Understanding of the criteria to be considered in selecting cable for an electrical wiring system, such
as types of conductor used.
2. Understanding the factors affecting the choice of the size of conductor in a electrical wiring system.

Topic 4: Protection in Residential System.

1. Understanding the differences between wire fuses and circuit breakers. Briefly explain the functions
of fuses and circuit-breakers.
2. Understanding of the advantages of circuit-breakers compared to wire fuses in electrical system
protection.
