ultimate load 252kN and the neck diameter at failure 18.25mm. Determine Young’s
Modulus, Yield Stress, Ultimate Stress, Percentage Elongation and Allowable Stress

1. a. A reinforced concrete column of size 230 mm x 400 mm has 8 steel bars of 12 mm
diameter. If the column is subjected to an axial compression of 600 kN. Find the stresses

b. A compound bar is made up of a central steel plate 60 mm wide and 10 mm thick to

by 80º C. Determine the stresses in each material and the change in length of the
compound bar. Assume Es = 200 GPa, Ec = 100GPa, αs = 12 x 10-6/ºC, αc = 17 x10-6/ºC.

2. a. Derive the expression for Euler’s crippling load when both ends of the column are

b. Find the Euler’s crippling load for a hollow cylindrical steel column of 38 mm external
dia and 2.5 mm wall thickness. length of column is 2.3 m and is hinged at both ends. Also
estimate the Rankine’s load for this column, Rankine’s parameters are 335 N/mm2 and
1/7500 and E = 2x105 N/mm2. (08 M)
3. a. Derive the torsion equation for a circular shaft subjected to pure torsion. (8 M)
b. The shaft is required to transmit 245 kW power at 240 rpm. The maximum torque may
be 1.5 times the mean torque. The shear stress in the shaft should not exceed 40 N/mm 2
and the twist 1º per meter length. Determine the diameter required if,
(i) The shaft is solid.
(ii) The shaft is hollow with external diameter twice the internal diameter. Take G = 80
