J. Robertazzi) was working uniformed security at the Central Regional High School. While working in the school, Vice Principal Angello Mazzuca and I were requested via schoo! radio to report to the Prineipal, Dr. Douglas Corbett’ office. Once in the office, Mr. Mazzuca and I were met by Dr. Corbett and Karen Horen, a school faculty member. J was advised by Dr. Corbett that Karen Horen reported to him that she discovered a a small handgun in her personal bag. Dr. Corbett had a small silver semi-automatic handgun on his desk. Prior to commencing any investigation, I retrieved sterile rubber gloves and rendered the weapon safe, by removing the magazine (w! cleared the gun's chamber (which was empty). was loaded) and | then briefly had Mrs. Horen explain to me what her actions were this moming upon her arrival at school. She stated that she arrived at school at her normal time and went to her assigned duty post which is located by the media center. She placed her bag and coat on the desk along side the hallway and tended to her hall duty. Upon conclusion of her hall duty assignment, she left her coat and bag on the desk and went to talk to LuAnn from the attendance office. Her bag was unattended for approximately 10 minutes. When she returned, she grabbed her bag and proceeded to her classroom. She opened her bag, to get her day started and noticed the gun in her bag. She immediately took her bag. ‘0 Dr. Corbett and advised her of the situ immediately requested that the cameras in that hallway be reviewed to see if anyone may have placed the gun into her bag while her bag was siting on the desk. Upon closer inspection, the gun was determined to be a North ‘American Arms Guardian 32 caliber semiautomatic pistol. I then requested that a road Supervisor and a Detective respond to the school, for follow up investigation purposes. While waiting for those personnel to arrive, I briefly spoke with Mrs. Horen and asked her if there was any way that this gun came from her home, She stated "No", "God no", [At this time, DSG. Peter Larocca, Det. William Somers, Sgt. Frank Bruno, Sgt. Brian Woermer, Ptl. Edward LaGreea, Pil, Scott Selby and Chief Karin DiMichele arrived for assistance in the followup. During the course of the initial checking of the surveillance cameras, it was determined that no individuals had approached or placed anything into Mrs. Horen’s bag while it was on the desk near her AM Duty Station. The information/description of the weapon was furnished to police dispatch, who subsequently researched its origin, ‘The results of this background check revealed that the firearm was owned by Ian Horen, the husband of Mrs. Karen Horen. Karin Horen was transported to police headquarters by Sgt. Frank Bruno for and official interview by the detective Bureau. ‘The Detective Bureau also retained possession ofthe firearm to be entered into the property room. (subsequently leamed from Investigative Personnel that Karen Horen had gone into the family safe to retrieve money for Christmas shopping and may have accidentally and inadvertently had the firearm fall or be placed into her bag without her knowledge) ‘Reporting Officer: ROBBRTAZZI, JOSEPH Piaied By RIGCARDELLIM, _ O2/14R018 162 Pazed Resaae REPORTING OFFICER NARRATIVE onk Berkeley Township Police Department 17003314 iti Ofease Due Tne Reported POLICE INFORMATION Tue 12/12/2017 08:43 ‘The Detective Bureau will make final determination of this investigation. ‘Reporting Officor ROBERTAZZI, JOSEPH Prine By: RICCARDELLIM, _OQIA01N 1625, Pages
