Jenny’s vacation diary

Aug. 23: Amish Country

Today we drove through Lancaster

County, In Pennsylvania. It was a
really interesting place –everyone
we saw was wearing old-fashioned
clothes. Dad said they’re called
“Old Order” Amish. Many of the
men had long beards. The women
wore dresses and white hats. They
are Christians and live a very
traditional life. They don’t use
anything modern; they have no
cars. No radio or television. No TV? I think I’d go crazy! They don’t have electricity. Day
said this is because they want to be independent from the outside world.

Dad was tired, so we stopped at a small town. There were Amish people everywhere.
Some were ridding buggies! I spoke to one guy, about my age. His name was Amos. He
said around 25000 Amish live in Lancaster County. Then his mom came over and they
spoke a strange language. Amos told me it‘s called Pennsylvania Dutch. It’s a little like
German. He said Amish people speak this language with each other. They only speak
English to “Englishers” (That is what they call people who aren’t Amish). I asked him
why he wasn’t in school. He told me Amish children leave school at 14. Lucky them!!!
Amos is 18, so he helps his parents on their farm.

I wanted to take a picture of him, but he said the Amish don’t like people to take
pictures of them because their religion says it’s wrong. So I shook his hand and said
goodbye. Then he wrote “God go with you, Jenny” on a piece of paper and gave it to
me! I was really pleased. My mom said he liked me. He waved at our car as we drove
away.

I think it’s hard to live in the past like that. Tomorrow, we’re going to Hershey Park. I
don’t think I will see Amish there!
