CPMA 20.3
• Multiphase Flow Measurement

– The 20.3 WG will address multiphase flow

measurement in the production
environment, upstream of the custody
transfer (single-phase) measurement point.

– These applications include but are not

limited to: measurement for reservoir
management, well tests, and flow allocation
from downstream reference measurements
including onshore, off shore or subsea
production systems.

– The document will provide practical

standards and processes concerning
multiphase flow measurement for regulatory
authority, users and manufactures
Multiphase flow
• Multiphase flow
(Chem. Eng.). Mixture
of two or more distinct
phases (such as oil,
water and gas) flowing
simultaneously in a
closed conduit
It is complex…..
• Superficial vs actual velocites
• Volume fraction vs holdup
• Vertical vs horizontal
• Liquid vs gas dominant
• Low vs high water cut
• Pipe size
• Pressure drop correlations
A mathematical problem
Business drivers for SS MFPM
• Subsea tieback with different ownership or
royalty/tax regime
• Long tiebacks to host or onshore terminal
• Individual well measurement for subsea
developments
– Reservoir surveillance
– Base management
– Production optimization
Multiphase vs Wet Gas
• The O&G industry has made an arbitrary
distinction between liquid and gas dominated
multiphase flow regimes
– Multiphase flow regime GVF < 80%
– Wet gas flow regime  GVF > 95%
– Note: the wet gas regime is better characterized
by the Lockhart-Martinelli number, X

SS MFPM Considerations
• Location
– XT, manifold, standalone structure
• Retrievability
• Power & comms
• Calibration
• Performance verification
• Maintenance & sustainability requirements
• Organizational capability
• Qualification – performance and reliability
• Can a single phase meter do the job?
In Summary
• Multiphase flow measurement is an inevitable
part of the business – it is complex but
fundamentally sound
• CAVEAT EMPTOR
– Know what you are getting
